Like I said.... The Idaho Botanical Garden in Boise is celebrating Smokey's 70th on Sunday (there's a 3-on-3 street basketball tourney downtown Saturday). I plan to go....if there's anything interesting to take pictures of, I'll post here. Meanwhile, feel free to post your Smokey-related collectibles here to wish the old man a happy birthday! First, why we still love Smokey (from KTVB news last year during the Beaver Complex near Sun Valley, Idaho). ![]() That's a "fire whirl", or mini tornado caused by the fire. The Sky Crane just finished dropping his load of retardant (the red orange cloud on the lower right). And just because it's an awesome photo, here's one by eyewitness Randy Minnick ![]() This is what Windlifter (also fashioned after a Sky Crane) does throughout Planes Fire and Rescue.... Smokey says: "Drown your campfire" (not "Dwayne the bathtub, I'm drowning"....) ![]() Until I figure out where other Smokey photos are in my library, here's one of Smokey's helpers: ![]()

Thanks for sharing Blair. I don't know why, but would have guessed Smokey to be older, I had imagined it from the turn of 19th-20th centuries. Great pics and memorabilia. Those "Americas Finest" figures are they the big GI Joe size, or the smaller ones? |

Doug, they're the "big" GI Joe size. There's a Brush Crew firefighter too, which I have photos of somewhere....just haven't figured out where yet. I could take more photos, but my Photobucket acct is almost half full! Glen, I can't remember seeing that Interagency ambulance before....though I'll bet I have in one of your threads in the old place. At any rate, really really cool! Emptywallet, I've always wanted one of those smokey Snuffit things. Way cool! |

The only place I ever saw them was Toys R Us. I showed them to a couple of the Alaska (BLM) Smokejumpers and they went out an bought one of the smokejumper for their loft or office. Of course, the smokejumper "modeled" is a US Forest Service jumper. |

When I retired, my office had a plaque made:![]() The actual little golden book is called "Smokey Bear and the campers". Our help desk tech did the graphic/photoshop job. I proudly display this in my toy room. There is more to the plaque...the sentimental stuff about service and dedication etc. But this was the key feature! Around the same time I found the original book in an antique mall for about a buck. I had to buy it. I am working off some of that weight.....

Blair, Great stuff! I was in the White Mountains National Forest last week, kind of sad to see the the US Forest Servcie did not have much around the visitors center on Smoke turning 70! I was at the center on Friday. Edited by Brian49, Aug 13 2014, 06:14 AM.
