Car of the Day for August 15, 2014 is the Hot Wheels (Redline) 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a luxury car that was produced in Great Britain in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first Rolls-Royce to use a monocoque chassis, a response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation.

Following in the manufacturer's tradition of building luxury vehicles, the standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 224 inches (5,700 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.

Initially, the model was planned to be called "Silver Mist", a natural progression from its predecessor Silver Cloud. The name was changed to "Silver Shadow" after realizing that "Mist" is the German word for manure, rubbish, or dirt.

The design was a major departure from its predecessor, the Silver Cloud; although several styling cues from the Silver Cloud were modified and preserved, as the automobile had sold well. The John Polwhele Blatchley design was the firm's first single bow model. More than 50% of its predecessor had been sold on the domestic market where, by the standards of much of Europe and most of North America, roads were narrow and crowded. The original Shadow was 3 1⁄2 inches (8.9 cm) narrower and 7 inches (18 cm) shorter than the car it replaced, but nevertheless managed to offer increased passenger and luggage space thanks to more efficient packaging made possible by unitary ("monocoque") construction.

As redlines go, the Euro rides don't fare quite as well among collectors, although that appears to be changing slowly. The redline Rolls has its own legacy, in that apparently Rolls-Royce objected fairly early on to Mattel using the spectraflame colors on models bearing its company name, consequently the redline Rolls was the first non-race model offered in the mainline with enamel paint...silver-grey. (I have heard of models found in Europe that were initially spectraflame that were repainted by Mattel to meet the demands of Rolls-Royce, though I have never seen one). I do know spectraflame colored models are quite rare by comparison, and any redline Rolls with a black roof is more desireable than without.

Cool history - I have never seen the Rolls Royce with a black roof. Mine is just the basic silver-grey. Being a lover of things British I really enjoyed having the Rolls Royce from Hot Wheels - I am thinking and recalling that this one probably did not make to many runs down my orange track. :D

Nice model - even though, like many other HWs of this era, it isn't a fantastic likeness. ( the two Matchbox ones are better in this respect.)

I don't remember it as a common model in the UK at that time although I got one from a friend years later.

RR have always been a bit fussy about their cars in model form. Oxford diecast are to make a 1/76 scale version of the badge engineered Bentley later in the year.

Chris

Anorak fact..... They used, under licence, Citroen's gas/air suspension. (As do JCB on some of their Fastrack tractors)

I've got two of the all silver, with interior color variations, but I've yet to find a black roof version, which I would add to my collection without hesitation, if an affordable copy was found.
