RCCA's 1965 Ford Galaxie is today's car.

The 1965 Galaxie was an all-new design, featuring vertically stacked dual headlights in what was becoming the fashionable style in a car somewhat taller and bulkier than the previous year's. The new top-of-the-line designation this year was the Galaxie 500 LTD. Engine choices were the same as 1964 except for an all-new 240 cu in (3.9 L) six-cylinder and 1965 289 cu in (4.7 L) engine replacing the 50s-era 223 "Mileage-Maker" six and the 352 being equipped with dual exhausts and a four-barrel carburetor.

Suspension on the 1965 models was dramatically redesigned. Replacing the former leaf-spring rear suspension was a new three-link system, featuring all coils. Not only did the ride improve, but handling also got a boost, and this system was used for NASCAR in the full-size class. Interiors were like the 1964 models, but a new instrument panel and two-way key system were introduced.

Samuel "Sam" McQuagg (November 11, 1935 – January 3, 2009[1]) was an American former NASCAR Rookie of the Year driver.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, McQuagg was named NASCAR Rookie of the Year in 1965 after achieving 5 top-10 finishes in 16 races. McQuagg was a major player in an incident in one of the wildest NASCAR races ever. McQuagg was leading the 1965 Southern 500, when Cale Yarborough tried to muscle past McQuagg for the lead. Yarborough flew over the guardrail, rolled around six times, and ended up at the end of the parking lot by a light post. Yarborough waved to the crowd as he walked back to the pits. A video clip of the wreck was used on ABC's Wide World of Sports for several years. The race was eventually won by 14 laps by Ned Jarrett.

Dodge noticed his accomplishments in his small Ford team, and Dodge hired him to their factory team. He was the first driver to use a spoiler. He used the spoiler to win the Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway; the flag from the Firecracker 400 now hangs on his grandson's wall. His Dodge Charger was sponsored by a newlywed Georgia couple. McQuagg was also the first driver to bring a motorhome into the Daytona garage area.

RCCA back in the early to mid 90s released several models of then current and vintage stock cars. They also issued a '63 Galaxie. This was a recent hobby shop find for a $1.

:toy: A great vintage stock car. It would have been nice if RCCA could have issued these as non racing cars as well. I keep wondering what ever happened to all of the molds and such that they used for their vintage stock cars?

Eve wonder what happened to our RCCA lifetime memberships? I, too, don't remember this particular version. I had a number of the '65 Galaxie's but didn't get all of them.

John, I still have my membership nbr. I understand that they won't accept the "lifetime" member nbr, but I read somewhere (maybe here at Swifty's??) that if you press them on the issue and mention "fraud," they will relent and let you use your original membership. Anyone here can verify that??
