Visiting the USA next year

Hey all,

I am looking to visit the USA next year primarily on my other hobby of beer hunting. I have been a few times before and would ultimately want to fly to Seattle, go to Oregon, maybe Alaska and Vancouver but not sure if my airmiles will stretch. So favourite alternatives are NY or Boston. I am being fussy as I am on airmiles so flights are cheap. Other alternatives are Washington, Baltimore, Philly or Chicago, at a push Texas, Denver, San Fran, LA, Vegas.

So, any beer festivals next year or breweries I should visit, my other hobby of Fire buff meets or other things of interest I should do? I will be a solo traveller as my better half is off to Japan to the world scout jamboree so I have a free pass.

Any suggestions?

Dave

I've never been to Washington or Oregon, but I hear that's the place to go for beer. I can say don't come to Texas for the beer. There are a couple notable breweries, but for the most part it's all watered down junk. Although there are plenty of other reasons to come to Texas and if you do I'd be glad to give you ideas. Colorado would be my recommendation. There are a ton of breweries, lots of beer tours, and the scenery can't be beat. If you go that route let me know, I have family there that can tell you where the best breweries are.

At the end of June every year in Lansale, Pennsylvania (just outside of Philadelphia) is the Lansdale Beer Fest. Over 100 microbreweries and absolutely incredible!!! http://lansdalebeerfest.com/

And Dmet, I will have that shipping quote tomorrow for the Mack Action System truck from the other forum.

If you're coming in spring, you could plan for CARnival (see events threads). No beer festivals but there is a brewery/pub nearby. Just don't order their burgers. 69ch can also testify to this :(

Dave, If you get anywhere near Niagara Falls/Buffalo, New York area, you can't miss this one. It is about one hour south of Buffalo near the Pennsylvania border, in ski country.

I first read your post as ...bear hunting, lol.

Washington, Northern California and Oregon are the places to go for beer. Colorado runs very close tho...

If you are in Eugene, OR, the thrift and antique stores (especially 45th & Main St. Vincent DePaul, Value Village, Trash-n-Treasures and More Of Everything in nearby Springfield, St. Vincent DePaul on Division Avenue in Eugene) are usually full of diecast at low prices with no sales tax, and there is an entire Brewery District with Ninkasi, Hop Valley and Oakshire Breweries, the Falling Sky Brewery Public House and Rogue Ales Eugene City Brewery & Public House nearby, and the Elkhorn Brewery & Cider House near the University of Oregon

You're welcome. BTW one of the places I listed in Eugene area, Trash-n-Treasures, is the best place for 1-75 Matchbox, especially Lesneys. Seriously, if you are in the Eugene area, are making a side trip there from Portland, or are en route to the Medford, Ashland and Grants Pass breweries from Portland and have time to stop, bring an extra suitcase for diecast, there is a lot worthy of picking up besides MBX that is good for trade bait, making a few extra quid or conversation pieces.

edit: Recommending that you make use of taxis and/or Uber if you do not have a rental car and are here & can afford the extra costs, the city bus system here is full of belligerent or unhygienic people and barely runs at all on weekends and evenings, our taxis are pretty nice by American standards and Uber almost always is staffed with nice cars anywhere you go.

One last tip: If in Portland, the Widmer Gasthaus and anything related to the Henry Weinhard brewery are overrated tourist traps serving less than great food and beer

Like others have said, Washington and Oregon have tons of breweries. I have not made it to that part of the world yet, but many of them are available where I live. California is also good, but Los Angeles has surprisingly few. San Fran would be a good choice.

Boston would be an excellent choice. I'm actually in the process of planning a trip there next year myself. In fact, the entire New England region is rich with breweries:

Pittsburgh also has a great craft beer scene, especially for a city of its size.
