Most "sources of data" are biased. Not that you can't find reliable information...but often that comes from comparing several sources and weighing the common denominators, Vs. your own tastes and opinions, hands on experience, etc.

One thing that's tough to get around: technology may be enabling us to produce more efficient cars, even some that would look like technology from a science fiction movie or space ship back in the 50's and 60's. But they aren't really building them tougher.
That's really the most sensible thing I've read in this thread so far.

Any magazine...any media in general (nightly news on TV, anyone?)...attempts to pass off their bias as fact. It comes back to "where is the money coming from?" I stopped reading the car rags years ago after seeing the buildups over the GM X-cars (remember those?) and the Pontiac Fiero...and how later both proved to be major disasters in the mind of the public consumer. Ford wasn't immune...Taurus, anyone? Chrysler always played second fiddle, so it was never surprising to hear how they were always playing catch up...but in general it turns out their cars were better (with exceptions) over the long haul than those trumpeted by the car rags.

I don't pay attention anymore, its all stupid. There are more important things in life to get your panties in a twist about.

If you like Camaros and can afford one, buy it. If you like Mustangs and can afford one, buy it. If you like Challengers and can afford one, buy it. And enjoy whatever you buy!

I like all three, and can't afford any of them, so I buy the scale diecast. Maybe if I stop buying diecast I can afford one of them...tough decision!

And then I think about the other thing Robert mentioned: the added technology, and how cars aren't really any tougher.

I remember talking to an oldtimer about the turbo 4 T-bird from the second half of the 80s. I told him what the rags said: "a 4 banger putting out the same horsepressure as a small block V8!" "Yeah," he said,"and they get it by overworking the engine. Those cars will be toast long before a V8 powered car will be."

You know what? He was right!

I see all the added gadgets and electronics on cars now, and all I see are more parts to break and have to spend $100 an hour minimum for a shop to fix. Give me short, sweet and simple anytime over all the geegaws and gadgets in cars now. Give me something I can work on myself...*without* an analytic computer, thank you very much. If you can't follow directions, what makes you think a gps is going to help? If you can't use mirrors (and common sense), why do you need a backup camera? More important...how much does it cost to fix or replace these "indispensible" gadgets? And you really, really don't want to hear what I think about "hand's free" phones in cars...they should hang the idiot that invented that, publicly, after extensive torture!

I'm just getting started and already I'm over the top. I need to stop now. This is a silly, silly argument. Who cares?

Both of these are the most sensible statements in this thread thus far.

I still read M/T and the rest of the car mags only when I get them second hand from HPB for 25 or 50 cents or from the library when they're getting rid of back issues. I take what's written in them with a grain of salt. I mostly look to see what's new as I do not browse car forums to keep updated or run around the new car dealership. I certainly have never used any such car magazines to influence my car purchasing. I have bought 2 new Buicks. Why? Because I've owned several used Buicks and they were well built, comfortable, reliable and pretty darn thrifty for cars their size. I've bought what works for me not what other's opinion of it was. Buicks aren't generally favored by the car mags anyway and I'm certainly not upset about that or stopped reading them because of that.

If you really need to blow some steam off, write a letter to the editor of the mag and tell them how you feel and why you feel another car deserved the title. I also read history magazines and I occasionally write letters to the editors when I feel they misrepresented a subject or made an error. 95% of the time they never acknowledge that I wrote to them, but for the other 5% of the time I love that sweet 'oops our readers identified our error' box printed in the next issue.

Shared the track with a couple of Z/28s at Daytona this weekend. There were an impressive number there considering how new the model is. Looks like a decent percentage of its owners are already putting the cars to good use.

How well did your Porsche do against the z28s'? Wesley I would buy one too but like you I can't afford one even if I didn't have this Hobby. Saying you like the three is cool and if I could buy a Challenger I would have that too. The car is really retro to me and just a great muscle car. I like the Camaro's rear end. It looks cool with those forked out fenders connected to the roof.

Well let's see...$75,000 505hp brand new car built for the track vs. my 10+ year old 217hp little sports car on a track with essentially two mile long straights...not too well :P

Well I rather drive a Porsche any day. Man i would be afraid to run my car on the track. Do people crash sometimes there? How much does it cost to run some laps?

Yep, people do crash. You can buy insurance though. This event was $550 for about 2 1/2 hours of track time- that's just registration for the event. Other tracks are much cheaper though.
