I know I had a thread like this around here somewhere, been quite a few months, but I wanted to show these two:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/311121990151?_trksid=p2060778.m1431.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I was watching this until it went out of my budget range, for the black Z Whizz (France)

Posted Image

This was already out of my league when I found it:

Redline Hot Heap, still carded on a super rare (only one I've ever seen) Japanese card

Posted Image

If money were no object, the Hot Heap would come to me! It is even the correct shade of purple/lavender, a striking coincidence.

Ouch, and ouch again.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the black Z Whizz would go for if it was loose?
(I imagine probably still more than I'd want to pay.)

French made Hot Wheels are some of the most in demand blackwall era Hot Wheels. Along with Mexico and LEO India, France models often command in the $50 and up range for the more "common" issues. Something like the Z Whizz, which I expect to be fairly high demand, I would expect to command at least $100 mint loose all by itself. I had no serious expectations of winning that auction, but a guy can dream. I only had $20 on it, which I would have happily paid plus shipping...but when I looked and saw over $100 for the three pack I knew it wasn't going to happen.

Wes.nice link..out of my range also...but if i thought i could get 50-70 for the monza i would give it
a go...also did you notice that 2 of the 3 cars are on error cards?

my guess is that the 3 pack will go for 200.00 plus.

Geek...the z whiz loose rated at c8.5 or above would easily go for 125.00 plus on e bay.

I did indeed notice! While the Porsche is nice, I would rather have the France made 31 Rolls advertised on the package!

Thanks for the info guys...too rich for my blood, but good to know what's out there and what the going values are for them. My problem is I can never remember or keep track of it all. I have a few Z Whiz examples, and am happy with what I have.

IMO, it is good to know what is out there, so you can keep an eye out for them. Pleasant surprises do happen, especially if the seller isn't concerned about final value or doesn't know or care what he has.

Not bragging, but one of my favorite finds was a pink redline Cord in very nice C8-C8.5 condition minus the roof which is almost always missing anyway, otherwise complete with good windshield and hood (two other parts that often go missing or broken). Easily a $100 car. Again, not bragging, merely an example...I found it buried in a lot of lesser cars, non-redlines and some weren't even Hot Wheels, from a guy out of Canada. I think the lot was like 24 cars or so, not a huge lot but big enough that it cost me like $50 or so after shipping...which I was more than happy to pay just for the Cord. Cord wrecks, missing hoods and tops and with broken windshields and brutalized paint, still fetch in the $30-40 range for rebuilders, and it is a popular model to restore. Replacement parts are available, and I did pick up a replacement lid for mine.

Point being, if you know what unusual (scarce/rare) cars are out there, you know what to look for buried in the strangest places. Someone here recently (Seberhusky?) showed off a lot he picked up that had a rare car buried in among 100 other cars, but he found it as soon as he saw it. (So did I, when he showed them to us here)

The Z Whizz is a popular casting with collectors, even more evident after the recent release of a Datsun 240Z (which is pretty much what the Z Whizz is anyway). Knowing the common releases helps to see the uncommon releases, but you also have to be able to pick out customs and budding picassos, sometimes buried in a blurry picture.

Or, you just take a chance and hope for the best. Even a blind pig finds a truffle now and then.

I have a few hard to find ones, but I didn't pay much. I have a T-Hunt Twin Mill from this year, but paid $1 for it at the store. I also have the "Dinosaur Digger" Blazer, but bought it from the flea market for fifty cents. I didn't know it was rare until I heard it here.

I don't really go out of my way to buy hard to find HW's, but if I find one cheap, I will pick it up.

i would have never thought the heap would go for that...i can only guess the card had a lot
to do with the high bids.

Thanks Wes, I definitely agree about gaining more knowledge about the brand, which I do pay more attention to what's rarer and what's not with Matchbox, and some others, and I guess I do know a little (very little) bit about HWs also since I have picked up old redlines in good shape when I find them for a buck or so, but I usually give them to a friend who collects them, and I'm somewhat attracted to unusual or special looking models of all brands when I see them cheap also, I guess that's me taking a little chance there.... but we have fun anyways.

As far as redline finds for me, one time I found in a box of diecast under a table at a train show a few near new examples, USA on base, for only $1 each, but I only kept the jeep for myself.

You see, I didn't know it was rarer either, until you mentioned it. I picked this up at a flea market as well, but paid $5 or maybe it was $7 for it, although it had a few things going for it to make me spend that on something I didn't have a clue about, outside of it being kind of cool looking in general, one thing was that it was unusual, since I never seen this paint/ scheme on the HWs Blazer before, then the fact that it was a Blazer which I liked anyways, and finally, maybe most importantly, the tampo design had my name in it. :D

the digger was only issued in a play set.the one you picked up in that condition is well worth the
5 to 7 price.probably even worth a few more bucks.

I agree the Digger was in a discontinued playset...but the cars were later released through the Mattel Company store in baggies, so minty examples are actually fairly common, considering.

Still worth the money.

BTW, this Blazer is the other casting of the few that Matty did with opening doors.

Ouch. People say diecast collecting is shrinking, but this proves there are still enough collectors out there with really deep pockets to keep things beyond the realm of interesting.

Even when the vast majority of HW were cooling off, redlines, collector grade Mbx with boxes (especially transitionals), and Playart were taking off. Redlines are beginning to cool a bit, but still high in comparison, and early blackwalls are gaining fans. The hobby as a whole seems to be picking up *gradually*, nothing like the mid-late 90s explosion, at least on the adult end. On the kiddie end I would think things are flat.

France, Mexico and LEO India made blackwalls have always commanded a premium for their rarity.
