I had a blue one as a kid, and another identical to it, which I think didn't have an interior and it had black glass.

It looks like they got the color idea from Aurora Cigar Box on this one.

I need one of these, now that I found my COTD alumnus Cigarbox bug in splinters at the bottom of a box. :(

Is this the first case of an interior being removed from a Maisto casting that for many years had one?

Auto World has remade the Bug body in the Popular Mechanics series. You can find the bodies by themselves on Ebay, and you might find an original Aurora body, and replace it. To remove the damaged body, slot the "rivets" with a Dremel which are actually screws without a head, and take them out. You might have to slightly cut one or both screw posts on the Thunderjet body, as often, on Cigar Box cars the screw posts are different from the Thunderjet slot cars.
