I wrote another review for the Live and Let Diecast blog. I know this car and brand need little introduction here, but Auto Worlds are rarely posted over there so I figured I would shed some light on the brand. I've copied the post and pictures for you to read here, and here's a link if you'd like to see it over there: http://liveandletdiecast.kinja.com/concours-dmodella-auto-world-2012-ford-mustang-boss-30-1676201087

I've been poking around this wonderful blog for a few months now. I love seeing all the HAWLs, reviews, trades, and everything else that goes on here. One thing that's especially refreshing is the great variety of die-cast that graces these pages on a daily basis. You guys post all kinds of scales of all kinds of cars from a plethora of manufacturers. But there is one relatively new company to the scene that I have not seen much of, and that's a shame because it deserves your attention and- if you collect American cars- your hard earned currency. That company is Auto World.

Auto World has been making slot car bodies and accessories for a few years, but until recently had only dabbled in die-cast. Last year, however, they burst onto the scene with some truly impressive American cars that rival models from the high-end Japanese companies in many respects. So, without further ado, I present Auto World's 1/64 scale 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302.

Design & Accuracy- 8/10

Would you just look at that thing? The shape is perfect, the details are spot-on, and car captures the 1:1 quite successfully. I especially like the ride height and wheel offset here- it does not get much better in 1/64. And those wheels! Accurate wheels are rare in this scale, especially in 1/64, but Auto World absolutely nailed them on this car. The tampo stamping is quite good as well, but could be more detailed on the front and rear, especially at the headlights. That's really the only thing keeping this car from a 9 or even a 10 here.

Fit & Finish- 9/10

Fun fact- that hood you see there? That thing opens. I'm not sure I have anything else in my collection this small with opening features that don't have giant gaps around them. It's a problem that's plagued the scale for as long as it's been around, but Auto World seems to have found a solution. Bravo. The tampo stamps also line up and there is only one very small QC defect (see if you can find it!). This is par for the course for Auto World, which is extremely impressive when you look at their local competitors.

Features- 9/10

About all its missing are jeweled lights and opening doors, the latter of which I don't even like at this scale anyway. The hood opens, revealing a generously detailed motor, there are rubber tires, the chassis is pretty detailed and metal to boot, and the interior looks excellent.

Value- 10/10

What might you expect a car like this to cost? Well, it is more expensive than a basic Mattel vehicle and even most of the premium ones, but not by much! This thing retailed for an incredible $6! That may sound steep if you are used to those mainline Hot Wheels, but it's a bargain compared to comparably detailed options. And believe me, you are getting more than 6x the die-cast when you buy one of these. This car has been around almost a couple of years now, but the secondary value on them has not really risen. The best part? Auto World has a line of cars that offer the same level of detail for a couple of dollars less- the difference is in the packaging and the cheaper ones don't include a display case like the top-line cars do.

Rarity- 3/10

Is this even a fair metric to throw at this car? I guess it's a standard category, so I'll include it. These were pretty easy to come by at American Walmarts 6 months to a year ago. I suspect there are still some of these Mustangs warming the pegs around the country, but I haven't seen any in several months. If you don't find one, you should still come across Auto World's newer offerings, so be sure to check them out! They are also fairly easy to find on eBay, with a handful of cars in the Completed Listings section but curiously only 2 available for sale at the time of this post. So it's not the easiest thing to come by, but still not difficult.

Total- 39/10

It's hardly fair. Take out the rarity section and this car earns an astonishing 36/40 points. But there's a certain charm a rare piece has that this car definitely lacks. Still, overall, this car is absolutely wonderful and I still can hardly believe something like this is available at retail in the US. An extremely high quality piece at a moderate price that delivers one of the best bangs for the buck in die-cast today. Be sure to look for it next time you're in a Walmart or at a show.

Really nicely done on the review, Jedimario! It is really nicely written, and the photographs look great!

As for this particular model, I knew I wanted it from the first time I saw the pictures of it. Although it wasn't there at the Walmarts I visited, the good thing was that Hobby Lobby had this model, and I was more than happy to pick it up. As you've stated, the accurate wheels are a rarity, so that is always a plus! No doubt one of my favorite features!

Great review... I know I have been buying AW slot cars and slot car hop up parts since the mid 60s. I used to pick up catalogs from a local hobby shop...
This Stang is awesome and nicely detailed... Have two colors of it...
