HUMMER
|
I recently picked this lot up on eBay for about $30 shipped. I remember seeing these sets at KB toys, but I didn't buy many. I think they made lots of them during their lifespan (2007-2010). No clue how many there are out there.![]() Night Landing (Assault Amphibious Vehicle/LVTP, Helicopter, rescue boat) ![]() Sahara Strike (HUMVEE, M2 Bradley, MLRS) ![]() Swift Strike (Airlift Helicopter/skycrane, Missile carrier) ![]() Polar Rescue (Airlift Helicopter/skycrane, Hummer H1 Rescue, Radar truck) ![]() ROGUE Sand Rats (Jeep Hurricane Concept, Missile carrier with jet) ![]() ROGUE Night Fighters (Dune buggy, Armored response vehicle) Edited by Diecastmania, Dec 30 2014, 06:02 PM.

I've added a couple of those to my collection (loosely bending my strict personal definition of "emergency vehicle" to include war fighters, as they're defending the lives of others before themselves). I really like the Night Landing set...it was my most recent acquisition. I wish Matchbox could make some of these vehicles again, even in the main line. I'd definitely become a "military collector" as well, if models like these came back. I found a couple at Big Lots a year or so ago. The field artillery/gun pieces are really desirable. I'd buy all the sets just to get a full set of the guns! Edit: Noticed the two guns in the bottom Night Fighters set have their own mounts; weren't meant to work interchangeably......(? or were they?) Edited by b2young, Dec 29 2014, 09:40 PM.

I like that the MBX (and HW as well...) Hummer is 1:72, makes it perfect to display alongside model armour and aircraft in that scale. |

I remember those - and passed on them. Kept hoping they might have done a Hummer ambulance or other type of military emergency vehicle in the series. |

The MBX Hummer really was a nice casting, and like you said, it fits in well beside other related items in that scale. Now I wish that I had bought some more... Anyways, those sets look quite nice. The AAV and MLRS are the ones that I'd like the most, but I don't remember seeing those in my neck of the woods..or else I would have bought them. |

Ah, the Sky Crane. I went through four of them over my childhood, including the white one shown. The winch part usually goofed up. Now, my fourth, found in mint condition in a flea market bin, is displayed. I have an MLRS. The one thing that has surprised me about it is that it's bigger than any other mainline model. The amphibious assault vehicle I've never seen, in any livery. Edited by cody6268, Dec 30 2014, 09:07 AM.

AAAAAAHHHH the Radar Truck returns!!!! Seriously these are really good sets. Something like this would likely still sell well now. The cannon was exclusive to these sets. |

Congrats on getting these, I believe they were like $5 each in stores when available. I picked up some of them then, probably would have got most, but money must have limited my choices. I don't remember that Swift Strike or Polar Rescue....nice looking sets. |

The AAV was the reason I bought that set; I hadn't ever seen it before, either. And I kinda took a shot in the dark on it, 'cause the seller's photo wasn't great.....I could just tell it was something different than I'd seen from Matchbox. I am curious if there were ever any different colors of that AAV released in any form? I've got an olive drab version of the MLRS as a single somewhere....can't recollect if it's "on card" or loose.... |

Crazy Matchbox guy

The AAV is it seems to be called here is officially known as the Amphibious Personnel Carrier. It was rarely used by Matchbox. It debuted as a US exclusive in the 2000 range in olive with a mud splatter on the side. As was the case for the US range, the first 10,000 had Matchbox 2000 emblazoned on the vehicle with the rest being plain. So there was an immediate variation. If you wanted to, you could look for changes in the mud splatter, as some were really quite spotty, and others quite misty. But anyway, after that the model was dropped from the basic range and never used again. It was briefly used again in USA as a part of a 4-piece "Heroes" series on single blister. Again these were not in large supply. Finally was its one-off outing the Battle Kings range as shown here. It was its third official and final outing, and the first time it was sold in major markets around the world. It did receive very little use throughout its short time in the Matchbox world. It is actually pretty heavy in hand. The top section is obviously not solid, but is still pretty heavy. The base is plastic, and it has a plastic turret on the roof that moves around. |

Well, I'd love to take that amphibian out of the package and play with it, but considering it's scarcity I'm reluctant. Wish I'd seen the singles in stores. Even back then I would certainly have bought it if I'd seen it in stores...and that doesn't apply to much of the "military" stuff--any brand--currently out there these days (even the blockade buster...though I have several of them.) Thanks for the information, David. |

Nice finds ! Not all models are a success IMHO but on the whole these are great sets. I like the idea of the good vs the bad and I believe Matchbox could have done more with this line. |

I bought all the sets when they came out. And I have opened and played with them all.....with my son of course. And the AAV is awesome to play with. As David said it is a heavy solid vehicle. I had.......I....I mean we had lots of fun with it. Greg |
