In 1981 Lesney put out a set for Japan. The Tokyo Giants. It consisted of eight 4x4 Chevy Vans, with the names of 8 players. DSCN5155 by Brian Walker, on FlickrEach with the team logo. DSCN5156 by Brian Walker, on FlickrI loved this set when I first saw it. I had to have one. Didn't take to long to track one down. Did not think it would get any better. The set was sold in a countertop display box. Walk up to the counter, and there it would be, pick one or the whole set of 8 out of the box, pay the man, and go. What a concept! Did not think I would ever see one. Than I did. So I bought it. But, it was empty. Empty shaped slots for each, it would hold 3 sets in it. Put it away. It was soon swallowed by my storage area. But, I set about finding more sets in order to fill it. Everyone has to have at least one dream. Time went on, and on.... A week or so ago, the wife and I were digging it the storage closet, and there it was. I had not seen the box in well over 12 years, maybe more. Now, where did I put those sets of vans? Finally, after waiting a very long time, I present the "TOYKO GIANTS". The box lid down... DSCN5157 by Brian Walker, on FlickrInside... What good idea you had Brian to put the empty box in a safe place and to wait until you found the cars. They look brilliant in their box. Congrats for that find and thank's to show us the pics

Play ball! This is a great set of special models to have in your collection. I never saw the box before - what a neat way to display this unique set of vans. I had a couple of them - a friend got them for me because he knew of my love for baseball and Matchbox and knew I would enjoy them. I like the way they display one side with the players name/number on a uniform and the team logo on the other side. As I noted, I had a couple of these and a Tomica Mazda Hiroshima Carp baseball car. |

Thanks for the comments guys. It was fun to do, and the results display great. Just have to find a safe way to display it now. And actually I had the sets of vans (+some) about 5 years ago. It just took me this long to actually get both box and vans in the same spot. And I have seen the leaflet a few times, there is one on the 'bay right now. Just not at the price I can afford anymore. |
