The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Just talked to Andy (running our Swifty's Garage promos) and he was telling me about this new piece he got in:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Matchbox-NYPD-NYC-New-York-Police-39-Chevy-Emergency-Service-ESU-1-64-Color-Comp-/191504699209?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c9691cf49

Looks pretty good to me and yes, it's accurate to the vehicles that the NYPD used back in the late '30s.

:1: Wow! That is an awesome vintage NYPD piece...very, very tempting. Guess it is a good thing I do not shop on ebay. :D Wonder what the story is behind this Color Comp piece and who had it produced.

$25 is a lot of money for a single Matchbox but It looked too good to pass up. I just ordered one.

I honestly do not mind occasionally spending $20+ for a model that has been made in limited numbers when it is something that fits my collecting interest or has a tie in with a fund raiser for a particular organization.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I have two Code 2 models in my collection, a 1950 Ford Panel Van ambulance by Ertl, and a Majorette BK-117, and both came from the agencies depicted on them. I paid $20 (minimum donation was $15) for the Ertl, which was a special benefit model for the local rescue squad and I purchased it directly from them. The Majorette BK-117 was a special benefit model for STARS, which I paid around $30 Canadian (less in USD) for counting the shipping from STARS's Saskatchewan base.

There's a company in Eastern Virginia called AdVentures, which does Code 2s much like ColorComp. They sell their extras for what, I assume was the cost to make them, which is around $5. I'm right now looking at the Greenlight Charger and Crown Vic they did for the Virginia State Police, as well as a set of a Matchbox International and Maisto ambulance they did for a Fire Dept. in New York State(which is $10 for the pair).

I understand Code 2s cost much more than the $1 their mainline cousins can be purchased for, at around $5, but this definitely isn't worth $25, and none of the funds are going to those that had it produced.

AdVentures has most, if not all, of their models printed by ColorComp. I do not believe they do any themselves.

ColorComp was authorized by Matchbox to print models for them. The collector definition of "code 2" is changed, printed, with permission of the manufacturer. Matchbox also authorized ASAP, and AdTrucks to print models for them. They sold all 3 of those companies unpainted blank models for that use.
Mattel, in the last 5 years or so, say that they revoked that authorization. ColorComp still claims that it is in effect for the blank models that they bought before that. Who knows, ColorComp's word is good enough for me.

Models printed without permission are designated "code 3". It covers wide ground, including customs that people make. Loads of convention cars are code 3.

Colorcomp also prints any job that they can get. I know that they have printed on Hot Wheels that were sent to them
I know that they did Maisto models, specifically the ambulance, as I have a few. I also have a couple of Maisto VW Caravelle models that I think they did. Not sure about specific authorization from Maisto, but they had to sell CCI the blanks, so that sounds code 2 to me also.
I would imagine that they have done Greenlights also, I don't know if they have gotten blanks from Greenlight.
But, if you collect enough of one casting, send 'em in, they can get printed.

IN regards to the $25 cost for the model, the model used is from the old collectibles line so they have a cost of about $10 each, even in today's aftermarket. Then the printing cost at color comp is about $5 per car if don in quantities of 100. So I imagine that it would be more plus the design work for a short run like this. Add in shipping both ways, listing costs and I bet there isn't too much profit in that price.

I have no problem paying for this model. It fits my genre, it is well done and the seller has always treated me right both on line and at shows.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Thanks, Sirentoys, for the great reference pictures. The right side has no rear panel markings. Mistake?

Your welcome for the phtos. I hadn't noticed the missing tampo until now. I think I need to contact the seller.

Outside of the missing tampo on the right side, it is a great looking model and one I have been very tempted to get but keep telling myself to "behave". :D

GO FOR IT!!

I'm a Matchbox only collector and I don't usually collect code 2/code 3 models. But the history behind this model made me want it. The metallic green is probably not the correct color for the time period but they did paint the vehicles green/black because of all the Irish officers. It's a nice piece of history.
