ERTL did two very nice versions of the '58 Chevy Impala in their American Muscle Series. One had fender skirts and a continental spare and the other the other without the skirts and spare. This was a fantastic series from ERTL of some nicely detailed, good quality diecast models. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Somehow this is one ERTL model that has excluded my collection thus far. Thanks for the pics John.

Love them both! The white reminds me of American Graffitti, and the lilac one is just plain gorgeous! |

Love these old ERTL American Muscle models with opening hoods and trunks. With so much focus on Autoworld these days, so many people forget (or don't even know about) these fantastic models! These are what, over 10-12 years old? Such an amazing amount of detail that sometimes not even AW can touch! Great models and thanks for sharing! |

These ERTL 1/64 American Muscle were released from the late 90s through at least 2000. Agree Clem, very impressive models still. |

I think I have a Mustang from the American Muscle series, when they were included (boxed) in the Collect and Play line a number of years ago. Too bad it was mostly '60s muscle in that line, and not this beautiful Impala. This looks great! |

What is interesting is some of the ERTL American Muscle cars were included in the K-Mart Route 66 series. |

John is correct. The white one was from the Kmart - Route 66 series. The one with the continental kit and wheel skirts was a hobby-exclusive, which came in a display box and was sold through hobby stores.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The "regular release" colors were: red, black, and seafoam green. The two-tone interiors Ertl included was another really nice detail that made these models extra nice.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And this dark teal (blue) one was exclusive to a set which included a matching 1/18 scale version of the same car. ![]() ![]() |

I don't know where I was at at the time, but I missed so many of these. I recall finding a few of the AM blisters and one or two acrylic boxes, never thought to look at Route 66 (I guess I saw the overpriced RCs and never noticed the AMs hiding in the line). I never knew about the hobby issues, or the magazine issues for that matter. The internet fan and hobby sites were essentially non-existent at the time, the 'bay was just getting going good, so word in the hobby was a lot more difficult to spread. At the time, right around 2000, I was mainly into HW, JL and Muscle Machines. Seems to me Revell did their nice Chevys and a few others right around the same time or just a bit after...I still think the Revell issues are only a tiny step behind the AMs, and I pick those up when I find them priced attractively. I pick up AMs when I find them now, priced attractively. It seems a lot of sellers believe them to be gold and price them accordingly...I tend to pass on those. I don't have both to compare, but a comparison between the AM and the Revell issues would be an interesting study. I know I would have a tough time choosing between the two. |
