Camping Trailer of the Day for March 2, 2015 is the Greenlight Airstream Bambi Caravan

Airstream is a brand of luxury recreational vehicle manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio, USA. It is a division of Thor Industries. The company, which now employs more than 475 people, is the oldest in the industry. Airstream trailers are easily recognized by the distinctive shape of their rounded aluminum bodies. This shape dates back to the 1930s and is based on designs created by Hawley Bowlus. Bowlus had overseen construction of Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis.

The company was created by Wally Byam, a lawyer by training, who began building trailers out of Masonite in his backyard in Los Angeles during the late 1920s. Byam published a magazine selling "how-to" kits to customers wishing to build their own trailers. After helping market Hawley Bowlus' trailer, Byam acquired the struggling Bowlus Company. In 1936 Byam introduced the "Airstream Clipper", which was essentially a rebadged 1935 Bowlus, with the door relocated from the front to the side. The design cut down on wind resistance and thus improved fuel efficiency. It was the first of the now familiar sausage-shaped, silver aluminum Airstream trailers.

Of more than 400 travel trailer builders operating in 1936, Airstream was the sole survivor of the Depression.

Airstream, still based in Jackson Center, is a division of Thor, Inc. The company manufactures 2,000 trailers and motorhomes per year. Airstream produces several models — Sport, Flying Cloud, International (CCD Signature and Serenity), Eddie Bauer, Land Yacht and Classic. 2015 trailer sizes range between 16 ft to 30 ft (4.9 to 9.4 m). Airstream also manufactures models for the European market.

I'm not certain of the year it represents, Airstreams have changed little over the years. I found one online from 1961 being restored, as well as models as recent as 2014 with little to differentiate them.

I am really happy Greenlight chose to make this model, it is a welcome addition.

Nice choice for COTD! Or in this case, trailer of the day!

There is an urgent desire for me to add this one into my collection, but it doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon. Oh, well!

Definitely a great one. I'm glad that Greenlight decided to make this line and that it seems to be a runaway success. Here's to a bright future for more Hitch 'n Tow models!

Wes, thanks for doing this particular feature.
I've always been a big fan of Airstream trailers.
And most importantly I am so happy that Greenlight decided to make this awesome little trailer.
I think that I had to wait about five months before I actually got to hold this cute little piece of diecast in
my hands with it arriving just a couple days before Christmas.
Well worth the wait.

My contribution:

I was inspired to take these pictures while shooting my "file Photo" of the M2 Daytona right after I got it a couple of weks ago. The Bambi was on my table right next to the diorama, and seeing that they were both silver and designed with a marked aerodynamic influence, I thought they were a natural, if really unusual, combination!
