Auto World's 1967 Ford Mustang GT is the car for today.

Wikipedia.com

The 1967 model year Mustang was the first redesign of the original model. Ford's designers began drawing up a larger version even as the original was achieving sales success, and while "Iacocca later complained about the Mustang's growth, he did oversee the redesign for 1967 ."[37] The major mechanical feature was to allow the installation of a big-block V8 engine. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was placed behind the newer 320 hp (239 kW; 324 PS) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE engine from the Ford Thunderbird, which was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. A 390 GT engine, and a 4-speed manual transmission recorded quarter mile times of approximately 13 seconds and trap speeds of over 105 mph (169 km/h)

Wikipedia.com

The Mustang fastback gained popular culture status when used in the crime thriller Bullitt (1968). Lt. Frank Bullitt, played by actor Steve McQueen, drove a modified Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastback with 390 cu in (6.4 L) 4V engine, chasing two hitmen in a black 1968 Dodge Charger in the film's car chase through the streets of San Francisco.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I picked up a couple of these when they came out. One actually would have sufficed, but my fear of a good casting disappearing before you realized it made me nervous.

I was always fond of the '67 Fastback.

Regarding the 390 "from the Ford Thunderbird," I don't think that is correct. The Tbird did indeed have a 390 available, but it was a unique engine found only in Tbirds. Parts did not interchange with the standard Ford 390 used in their other passenger cars and light trucks. For example, the exhaust manifolds on the Tbird were notched to fit in special grooves on the Tbird heads...a feature not found on the standard 390. AFAIK, and I am certainly no expert, the Tbird engine was not used in Mustangs or any other Ford passenger cars. I did tinker on 390s in Galaxies, and my step dad had a '63 Tbird with the aforementioned Tbird specific 390. (My friend's '69 Tbird had a 429)

Great looking diecast!

I love this casting. I have both the R2 Ultra Red (which is probably the best looking in that metallic crimson color) and the R1 blue one. The blue one was my first taste of Auto World, but definitely not my last. I'm now a pretty good customer of the brand, buying both slot cars and diecast.
