Typically HK were chrome, and Macao were black. I'm trying to see if there were exceptions but I haven't seen any yet.

It seems that a large portion of my small collection that doesn't fit the rule.

Sporty Shifter - orange - HK - black
Master Blaster - red - HK - black
Rallye Champ - white - HK - black
Shooting Star - green - HK - black
Saturn Seeker - maroon - HK - black
Saturn Seeker - white - HK - black
Twin Tank Turbo - maroon - Mac - chrome
Evil Eye - light blue - Mac - chrome
Jet Vet - tan - Mac - chtome (I also have a HK chrome one)
TR Terriffic - red - HK - black

I'd wonder if it was a regional distribution thing, but I only owned one Fast 111 car as a kid and most of mine have come from ebay lots, not flea markets or other local places.
Welcome aboard, and thank you for the list!

found a listing for a Jet Vette in pack on EBay still sporting a ToysRUs price tag , $1.18.....pricey for 1980.
True, but TrU has *always* been pricey unless you hold out for sales or clearance.

I'm late in the conversation, but while on-topic about the license plates on these, just something cute from me:

The elusive orange version.
Wow! OK then, apart from a couple other models with special editions (the Mustang, Fun"E"Car) that makes the only one with three different paints!

There's a white whip antenna that pops in the hole on the back of the MB one. I believe there's a Blazer or Bronco that has the same antenna on it.

And a Jeep. There's also the newer Sand Speeder sandrail that has a whip antenna.

Did the Kenner Gravel Grinder Jeep make it into the MBX line?

When I was a kid, these were everywhere and I completely despised them. They still don't do it for me and it's actually amazing how rare they are given how many were actually available. I believe MPC also did 1/24 plastic models.
