Car of the Day for March 28, 2015 is the Racing Champions 1935 Duesenberg SSJ

The SSJ is very similar to the SJ version, but with a horsepower close to 400 hp (298 kW).

The only two examples built in 1935, the SSJ Speedsters sported a lightweight open-roadster body produced by Central Manufacturing Company, an Auburn subsidiary in Connersville, Indiana. One of them belonged to the actor Gary Cooper, the other one was lent by the company to actor Clark Gable, who already owned a Duesenberg J.

Quote:

The inscription SSJ (same goes for SJ) has never been officially used by the company, but it eventually became commonly used among the car lovers.

Quote:

The second "S" stands for "short wheelbase" as the two SSJ are the only Duesenberg to have a chassis with the wheelbase shortened to 125 in (3,200 mm).

The 420 cu in (6.9 l) straight eight engine of both SSJ models is equipped by two special carburetors and inlet ports of a special shape called "ram's horn", which was used in other SJs as well. Unlike the normal port, the "ram's horn" is composed of two horns and each of these then splits in two again. At the rear, the SSJ sported an external spare tire and smaller "later-style" round taillights. The external exhaust pipes sprouting out of the hood were an indication it was the "supercharged" version, but these were optional on J models as well.

Probably my favorite Racing Champions casting! I know guys love their exotics and Ferraris and Bugattis...give me a Duesenberg *any* day over any of those cars.

That's just simply stunning! And as an exotic car guy, to my fellow exotic car guys, this was the Ferrari of its day. It may be American and from several decades before the term exotic car even came to be, but its every bit the exotic as any Ferrari could ever hope to be. Love this particular version too!

Oh yeah. Duesenberg held *many* land speed records, Indy and other racing records up until WWII.

Think about it...400 horsepower is pretty impressive today...but 1935? Those cars rocked! (Yeah, sure, you can get 500 horse Mustangs *now,* and with all the current technology there are some serious brutes out there pushing probably two to three times that much. Duesies did it with carburation and no computers... :D )

:toy: Glad to see this RC Duesenberg SSJ - one of the nicest models RC had available. I wonder if they had continued on their own if they might have offerd some other '30 era cars.

I yearn to find those elusive museum colors on this car someday! I'm envious of them. Great selection!

The black and silver is the one I'm missing. If I recall it was paired with a 1/18. I also need another champagne color one that I can open...

Thought I had Tom Z talked into pitching this model for the JL line, and then Tomy bought them out.

I never knew about this one, and I'm a huge Duesenberg fan! I gotta find one of these, or more if I can in it's various colors. A real beauty.
