Today's SUV of the day is Fuzion's 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser

Posted Image

Wikipedia

The Toyota J40 is the model designation for a Toyota Land Cruiser 40 series made from 1960 until 1984 (in Brazil, where it was known as the Toyota Bandeirante, it was made from 1968 until 2001). Most 40 series Land Cruisers were built as two-door vehicles with slightly larger dimensions than a Jeep CJ.

This model Land Cruiser is an HJ45 Troop Carrier, and as far as I know is the only version of a 45 series Land Cruiser in 1/64.

Wikipedia

The model was available as the FJ40 series (with F engines) and also BJ40/41/42 (short wheelbase), BJ43/44/46 (middle wheelbase) or HJ45/47 (long wheelbase) designation where it had a Diesel engine. Land Cruisers built in Brazil from 1968 to 1993 - with Mercedes-Benz engines - received OJ40/45 (OJ50/55 from 1973) series chassis codes and those built from 1994 to 2001 - with Toyota engines - have BJ50/55 series model codes.

These wouldn't happen to be made by the same company that makes the cheap diecast line (Dickie is Majorette's parent company) for Dickie, would it?

Looks great!

Support your local demo derby.

An old school SUV is a must in 1/64. What's the approximate cost for these?

Cody, as far as I know, this isn't related to Dickie, but I'm really not sure. I'm not aware of a version done by them either, did they do one that you are aware of, or just speculating based on similarity to some other models?

Zach, I don't know how much these retailed for originally, but I would imagine they were inexpensive, probably somewhere in the $1-3 range. I know they were sold in the Philippines but not sure what other markets they were available in when new. What I do know, is that very few have come up on Ebay since I started searching for them about a year ago, and the few that did, I was outbid on by a long shot. I think I remember one selling for almost $50! I guess like the Matchbox FJ40's, the demand for vintage Land Cruiser diecast is still going crazy. I'm very thankful to Toyotageek for selling me his extra for a reasonable price.

A great model, for sure! As mentioned before, the extended version is a nice touch.

Definitely will be in contention for my vote for the week!

It is a neat looking Land Cruiser. Love the variety of cars and trucks and brands that show up in COTD.

Cody, as far as I know, this isn't related to Dickie, but I'm really not sure.
The design of the wheels is what likely prompted the question.

I hadn't noticed while perusing the pictures on my phone, but now that I see them full-size, I see the similarity between these wheels, and the wheels Dickie used on some of their diecast.

I doubt there is any connection, but anything is possible.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Even the other cars pictured (Dickie?) are notable and are worth having. The FJ looks like a "Suburban" version...long and square!
Hmm...all the possibilities for customs if it were available for 83 cents at Walmart!! :D

I got mine in Hong Kong two years ago it came in a three pack blister card
(unfortunately the packaging is long gone)
with a VW Beetle and a truck, I've always thought it was a Soma.

Cool.... thanks for sharing Rob. I like your version of the Land Cruiser with the IMO logo. ^_^
The ones I got came from the Philippines, but I don't recall how I first learned about them. I also have a red Beetle. I see your Land Cruiser has silver/chrome wheels. Do you still have the truck? I'm curious what it looks like.

I found mine in Cebu back in March of 2009.
It was a great diecast trip. Found 3 unknown to me diecast makers, lots of Tomica, Tamiya, and a racks of THS and STH

Nice! How do I get one??
May i repeat that question! A highly sought after model!

As for the Dickie question - well, i presume that this Land Cruiser and most of the Dickie diecasts actually come from the same factory.
I have a number of models with wheels in the same design and they really came from all kinds of packages.
Most probably those are all by the same manufacturer.

There is one currently on Ebay from the Philippines. It's not cheap, but then again they aren't readily available any more and it may be another 6 months before another is listed.

Love these! Would put HW S10 or BRAT real riders or JL/Ertl XJ Cherokee wheels on mine and nominally detail certain spots, if it was my car. I'd need all 3 colors too
