Today's car of the day is Kaiyu's 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe.

Wikipedia

The first-generation BMW Z4 was designated the E85 in roadster form and E86 in coupe form. It was designed by Danish BMW-designer Anders Warming.

From 2003 the Z4 Roadster is available as a 3.0i (3.0 L I6 with 231 hp), a 3.0si available with the new generation 3.0 L I6 with 265 hp (198 kW), a 2.5si with a 2.5 I6 with 218 bhp (163 kW; 221 PS), a 2.2i with a straight-6 170 bhp (127 kW; 172 PS) engine, or a 2.0i with a 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS) 2.0 L I4. The Z4 coupe is available only in the high-performance 3.0si trim powered by the 3.0 L 255 hp (190 kW) I6. The Z4 (E85 Roadster/E86 Coupe) was built at the Greer plant.

This was sold under the brand 4D, and was a model kit that required assembly of the base, body, interior and wheels, although everything just snapped together. Of the few examples of the 4D kits that I have, this one seems to be the most accurate, although quality is still on par with other cheap diecast brands.

That's not bad looking for a MotorMax, $1 level car. I'm not a big fan of the BMW Zcars, but I do like this one...the bubbleback / fastback design certainly sets it apart from the crowd.

:toy: At first I read the name wrong and thought it said Kyosho and thought couldn't be. Not familiar with the Kaiyu brand - not a bad looking model and the fun of putting it together.

I found the "already assembled" version of this decent casting in Walmart, south of the border in Mexico. After I stocked up on castings and colors I wanted, I found them again at one of the dollar stores here in the US. The Z4 was part of the second wave of castings from Kaiyu. The first wave (Charger, Magnum, X5, X6, Lancer, Impreza) I remember first finding at 99 Cents Only stores, beginning in 2009. The second wave came a couple (few?) years later, but before HW issued their Z4 coupe. I remember being very excited to see this coupe casting, as it was the only one in small-scale at the time.

The wheels are very much like Motor Max (and MM even has their own Z4 Roadster casting), but there is no (known) connection between these two companies.

Support your local demo derby.

This looks reminiscent of recent offerings from Suntoys which are also commonly found at $1 stores. Wes does have a point, the wheels do look like newer Motormax wheels.

Ben, could you snap a pic of the base whenever you get a chance? I curious to see how it 'snaps' together.

It certainly is neat to see this version as opposed to the convertible.

Zach,

Here's a picture of the base. It doesn't so much "snap" together as it does rest on top of each other. All the pieces are assembled just like they would be if it were riveted on, it's just barely tight enough to hold it together and comes back apart easily enough by just picking it up too fast, that perhaps it's meant to be glued in place.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Very interesting. I think I may have run across some of the ones that Dean mentioned in the 99cent stores, or another dollar type store , but I didn't buy all castings because I didn't know how good they really were. I still can't remember which I may have or not have. Oh, well.
