I have a bunch of these vans that look like this, in different paintjobs:![]() I think I was told that they were Pioneer or Universal. I later found this site, that has the van in question and has it listed as Welly brand, but I thought that the "Speedrive" name was Soma's branding? Also thought that totem pole bird thing was Soma's logo too? Mick's WL Speedrive 25 PCS. TRANSPORTATION SET |

This Ford Econoline based van is indeed a Soma casting which Realtoy also borrowed as its own and indeed still sells it in certain Emergency related multi-sets. |

Soma it is. But this casting was shared with Universal (along with the 1975-ish Chevy C-10 Stepside pickup), albeit with different wheels. I don't know which came first, but I would guess the (pre-Kidco) Universal brand had them first, and they were copied or sold to Soma. (That guess is based on Universal existing in the early 1980's, but the other Soma castings were of mid-1980's cars - Fiero, 300ZX, etc., but it is still just a guess.) Pioneer has not had an older American van in their lineup (there is a '92+ Econoline based Ambulance and motorhome in the Pioneer casting bank). Likewise, Welly does not have a Ford van in their casting bank. Welly went with the Chevrolet G-20 for the "mandatory" classic U.S. van in their line-up. ![]() |

I agree. I seen this too, which I think I told you about off-site. The main thing I noticed this with, was for some reason, the "California Calypso" van. It seemed to have first been Universal, then repackaged under Kidco w/ Kidco's new wheel-style being the only thing changed on it, after that it never appeared again elsewhere. I guess that was when Soma picked them up. |
