Today's Car of the Day is Hot Wheels' '67 Ford Mustang Fastback.

Wikipedia

The 1967 model year Mustang was the first redesign of the original model. Ford's designers began drawing up a larger version even as the original was achieving sales success, and while "Iacocca later complained about the Mustang's growth, he did oversee the redesign for 1967 ."[37] The major mechanical feature was to allow the installation of a big-block V8 engine. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes.

I know, I know. A Hot Wheels Mustang. Big deal! I'm inclined to agree. While I like my Fords and Mustangs, they are not exactly interesting die-cast material because there have been so many of them. Regardless, as a Mustang fan I do keep a good number of them around, and as such I happened to pick one up at Carnival and it's made it into a CotD post this week :D

Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift spoilers in this paragraph!
This car is from the Fast and Furious sets Mattel has been releasing lately. This was the hero car from the 3rd F&F film, Tokyo Drift. At the end of the movie, the protagonist is facing the big showdown race against the main "villain" but does not have a driveable car- only a wrecked Skyline. His father, if I recall correctly, has an old, motorless Mustang sitting in a garage nearby. If you can put two and two together, you know what's next- the Mustang ends up getting the turbo I6 from the Skyline stuffed into it, and our hero races the bad guy down the mountain in the most red-headed stepchild of a car Hollywood has ever come up with.

While this car played an interesting role in the movie, I just wanted it because the colors look so good!

I like it. For a $1 car it is presentable.

Muscle Car
:toy: While there are lots and lots of Mustangs in diecast it is a marque that always seems to catch my eye and I enjoy seeing them. One of my youth keeps teasing me and wanting to know why I didn't replace my Taurus with a Mustang rather than a mini van. Hot Wheels does do a nice job with their Mustang castings.

I love this one! That's my favorite body style Mustang, and green is the best color for it in my opinion. I love movie cars too, so add the Fast and Furious connection, and this one is a winner in my book.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
This is one of HW's better Mustangs and a fun casting to collect. It has gone through a number of tooling changes, especially the non-opening hood version. Even so, I think they did a good job of retaining the original look and shape of the earlier issues.
