Today's Car of the Day is Matchbox's Audi TT Coupe.

Wikipedia

The production model (internal designation Typ 8N) was launched as a Coupé in September 1998, followed by a Roadster in August 1999. It is based on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform as used for the Volkswagen Golf Mk4, the original Audi A3, the Škoda Octavia, and others. The styling differed little from the concept, except for slightly reprofiled bumpers, and the addition of a rear quarterlight windows behind the doors. Factory production commenced October 1998.

I was about 10 years old when these first came out. I remember using the car quite a bit in Midtown Madness 2 and had some great fun with it. I've always liked the looks of this car and to this day still think the 1st gen coupe is the best looking TT, especially some of the sportier refresh models. So I of course have taken a liking to this casting, and especially like the colors and tampos on this 5-pack release.

However, I just cannot get over the fact that it's a Golf underneath. I've actually driven an AWD version of one of these, and let me tell you, there's nothing too special about it. It'll always be a nice looking car, but that's about it.

But hey, working suspension!

I like the looks of the early TTs as well...to me they are the retro Karmann Ghia.

+1

And Matchbox did a really nice job on replicating it. I like this one a lot.

I'm a big fan of '90s Matchbox, as that's when they were last truly "good" as many old Lesney models were still in the line, and features like opening doors, hoods, etc. and functioning suspensions were still very common.

Great! Even though I myself am not a big fan of the real car, I appreciate the full detailing, and of course, the working suspension.

:toy: Wow...front and rear light treatment! Yes, a time when more effort was put into the Matchbox line.
