Today's Car of the Day is RMZ City's Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG.

"Car and Driver"

Previous E-class AMGs merely had stiffened versions of the standard suspension, but like its little brother, the C63 AMG, the new E63 gets a seriously reworked suspension compared with that of the standard car on which it’s based. The 2010 version gets an entirely new front axle with a 2.2-inch-wider track. Spring rates are twice as stiff as the regular car's, necessitating a change from air springs to conventional coils. Load-leveling air springs remain at the rear. In addition, the anti-roll bars and the subframe bushings have been beefed up. And if the standard E63 is too soft for you, a Performance package stiffens up the front anti-roll bar and the tuning on the standard adaptive dampers, adds lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels, and raises the electronically governed top speed from 155 mph to 186.

Auto journalists and enthusiasts have long lauded almost everything that comes from a factory featuring an ///M badge, often proclaiming those cars to be the best drivers in their respective segments, especially when equipped with 4 doors. But in recent years, I've begun to think that these people have failed to consider an important concept- you can build the best driving sedan the world has ever seen, but at the end of the day, you're still stuck with a sedan.

AMG has taken a different approach from the start. Why bother trying to turn a large sedan into a sports car? Just give it a ridiculous amount of power and make sure it can go through tires faster than a youth soccer team can go through a CiCi's buffet. Thus, the "Hammer" E-Class sedan was born in the late '80s, and this car continues that legacy in modern fashion.

This car was probably my most surprising find at CARnival this year. I am a huge fan of AMG and definitely do not have enough of them in my collection, so this was a welcome addition. I picked it up in a basket of other loose RMZ castings (no doubt what caused the few nicks you may see in the pictures) at the dinner venue on Saturday evening where it sat on a shelf in the restaurant's gift shop alongside locally made crafts and home decor pieces. Generally, I take RMZs when I can find them, no matter how odd the venue, so I wasn't complaining! Oddly enough, the infamous Mercedes hologram sticker was applied directly to the base of the vehicle, so it looks like these were intended to be sold loose from the factory. Quite strange for something so detailed. This car also comes with a pullback motor, which is a bit of a deterrent but not a huge deal to me. If I just consider it a burnout simulator, it becomes much less annoying!

I really like this car and the RMZ rendition. I bought full sets of many of the RMZ models (from online sellers), which come in a case of 16 per box (4 colors per car, repeated 4 times). They come in a display box with a thin plastic liner, holding the cars in place until they are theoretically, purchased individually. Welly pullbacks, Kinsmart and Dream Becomes True models often are packaged the same way, for example.
This color is very attractive on this model!
Great choice, and this has a strong chance of getting my vote this week.

I had seen this one several times while perusing Ebay, but always assumed it was a regular E-Class. It was still on my want list as that, but now that I see it's an AMG, it's jumped about 20 spots. I really like the few RMZ City cars that I have, they all seem to be very well done.

A fellow teacher at my school had a '10 E350... she was, shall we say, vertically challenged, and could barely drive it. I can't even imagine what she'd do with the gobs of power in this particular variation. Good choice for CoTD, especially since "it's just a sedan."
