Today's SUV of the day is Matchbox's 2011 Ford Explorer

Wikipedia

The fifth generation 2011 Explorer takes cues from the Explorer America concept's construction, and includes a unibody structure based on the D4 platform, a modified version of the D3 platform. The new Explorer features blacked-out A, B, and D-pillars to produce a floating roof effect similar to Land Rover’s floating roof design used on its sport utility vehicles. Ford already uses this floating roof design on the Ford Flex. The Explorer's C-pillar remains body colored. It also gets sculpted body work with stepped style headlamps similar to the Flex, Edge, Escape, Expedition and F-150. In addition, the Explorer receives new stepped style tail lamps. The grille will receive the corporate three-bar design with upper and lower perforated mesh work, similar to that of the sixth-generation Taurus.

This is from the new Supreme Hero line of Matchbox, and this version looks pretty sharp to me.

Wikipedia

The fifth generation 2011 Explorer, developed under the program code name, made its debut online on July 26, 2010. Ford had set up a Ford Explorer Facebook page ahead of its debut.[29] Assembly of the fifth-generation Explorer moved to Ford's Chicago Assembly plant, where it is built alongside the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS. The Louisville plant, where the previous generation was built, was converted to produce cars based on Ford's global C platform (potentially including the Ford Focus, Ford C-Max, and Ford Kuga). Like the Escape, the Explorer will continue to be marketed as an "SUV" rather than a "crossover SUV". It went on sale in early 2011; pre-launch sales had by the end of November 2010 totaled around 15,000. The EPA rated fuel economy of 20/28 mpg city/highway for the four-cylinder EcoBoost engine option.

Nice! In my opinion, Matchbox should have made the stock Explorer instead. Much more realistic, with more opportunities..but I'm sure they have their reasons!

Looks sharp and well-done in the CHP livery, definitely one that I will need to buy if I ever see it.

I drive the real thing, so I really want to like this...but I don't. It is a novelty, at best. I will still need to get at least 2....a wheelswap will be in order!

Support your local demo derby.

The tampo work looks quite nice. When it was announced this line would feature rubber tires I had high hopes. After seeing what they have it was a bit of a letdown. Will look for the Crown Vic in this line but may pass on this one.

:toy: Great to see the CHP markings on this one but the casting leaves me a bit short on liking it. I will get one because it is a police vehicle and especially because of the CHP markings...but Matchbox could have done so much better with this one.

I don't really like the casting, as it's heavily modified, which most police cars aren't mudders. But, I've got two of this model (fire chief and Forest Ranger).

Still though, it's not half bad. My main issue is that these new Super Max wheels are unsightly. The one-piece plastic wheels looked great, and should have been used instead.

I like modified off roaders myself, and Matchbox has done some nice ones. But this was one that never really looked right to me either. That is until this version. Most of it boils down to the great job with the CHP livery and extra details. But I guess I'm in the minority, as I really like the wheels on this. On the fire trucks in this first batch, I didn't like the wheels as they were red and white, and you could tell it was colored plastic, but in black and chrome, I think it looks convincingly enough like an aftermarket wheel and the tires have deep tread making it look like an all terrain tire.

To my eyes it seems bloated...I can't quite pinpoint why, but the proportions seem off as well.

I'm not sure what the price will be at major retailers. I overpaid at $4.50 as I got it Hobbytown which is always $1-2 more per car. I'm assuming they will be about $3 at Walmart. At $3 I can see this line being a success. At close to $5 I think they might sit on shelves.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
It appears to be overdone with lights and looks too "desert rally." I have only seen the actual police version with one front light bar and stock body. I've looked the casting over several times and I think it would be too much work to convert. Even so, I like it for what it is, and I'll buy variants as they are issued.
