Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels 1968 Pontiac Firebird

Wikipedia

The first generation Firebirds had a characteristic Coke bottle styling. Unlike its cousin the Chevrolet Camaro, the Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end. The Firebird's rear "slit" taillights were inspired by the Pontiac GTO. Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. Originally, the car was a "consolation prize" for Pontiac, who had wished to produce a two-seat sports car of its own design, based on the original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared such a vehicle would directly compete with Chevrolet's Corvette, and the decision was made to give Pontiac a piece of the pony car market by having them share the F-body platform with Chevrolet.

This is Hot Wheels' "Custom Firebird" casting, and best I can tell it's a 1968, but looks like it has a few characteristics of a 1967 too (front marker lights are centered under grill instead of on the side). Given that it's supposed to be a custom though, I'm going with 68. It is from the Hot Wheels Red Line Club, and looks nice and mean in black with red accent stripes. Please ignore what looks like a poorly fitted hood. Or at least take it as a warning if you have one. It came from Hot Wheels perfectly flush and neat, but I of course wanted to open the hood. Well, it only opens a fraction of an inch, and I figured it had to open more and tried too hard bending it in the process. It does not open more. Lesson learned.

Wikipedia

The base model Firebird came equipped with the OHC inline-6 and a single-barrel carburetor. The next model, the Sprint, had a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215 hp (160 kW). Most buyers opted for one of the V8 engines: the 326 CID (5.3 L) with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 hp (190 kW); the "H.O." (High Output) engine of the same displacement, but with a four-barrel carburetor and producing 285 hp (213 kW); or the 400 CID (6.6 L) from the GTO with 325 hp (242 kW).

I guess I'm not familiar enough with the Hot Wheels Club offerings, because I've never seen this bad boy before! Pretty cool - A mix of stock-appearing details and full-on custom stuff.

I like it. I haven't seen this one, either, so it is a nice surprise to see something I didn't know was out there, as COTD!

When you buy cars in the RLC, you get points that you can use at the end of the year for free cars. This was one of the free ones I got with my points, and I almost didn't get it. I could have sworn that they had done other versions of this casting and that I even probably had another version, but it turns out this is the only one, so I'm glad I did. The more I look at it, the more I like it. It has a definite look and feel of an early redline with it's proportions.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I missed this one probably because I chose something else for a bonus car, and didn't have enough points for more. This one looks really good.

I am amazed at how many people at Swifty's are not Red Line Club members, especially with so many good collections I've seen here. I joined in the first year Mattel offered it, and it was the single most good move I made since I became a collector. I have so many really high quality offerings that you just will never see in stores or online dealers. I like getting many of them out sometimes and just admiring them. The best part is you only have to buy what you like, you don't have to buy all the specials they offer.
