The White Motor Company was an American automobile and truck manufacturer from 1900 until 1980. The company also produced bicycles, roller skates, automatic lathes, and sewing machines. Before World War II, the company was based in Cleveland, Ohio.

White Motor Company ended car production after WWI and began producing trucks. The company soon sold 10 percent of all trucks made in the US. Although White produced all sizes of trucks from light delivery to semi, the decision was made after WWII to produce only large trucks. White acquired several truck companies during this time: Sterling, Autocar, Diamond T, and REO. White also agreed to sell Consolidated Freightways trucks through its own dealers. White produced trucks under the Autocar nameplate following its acquisition. Diamond T and REO Motor Car Company became the Diamond REO division, which was discontinued in the 1970s.

By 1980, White was insolvent. Volvo AB acquired the US assets of the company in 1981, while two energy-related companies based in Calgary, Alberta, Bow Valley Resource Services, and NovaCorp, an Alberta corporation, purchased the Canadian assets, including the Kelowna, British Columbia, plant, and the Western Star nameplate and product range.

Volvo produced trucks as White and Autocar through the 1980s, while Western Star continued independently in Canada and the United States, although Volvo-White–produced high cab over engine models were purchased and rebadged Western Star for sale in the Canadian market through the early 1990s.

Volvo purchased GMC's heavy truck business in 1987 and merged it with White, creating the White-GMC brand.

Steering Rigs are a fun little side collection in the Hot Wheels range. I've developed a minor fascination with the White Motor Company trucks of late, they are a very underappreciated brand that used to be seen commonly on the roads and now are but a distant memory, sort of the Studebaker of heavy vehicles.

:toy: The steering rigs were rather fun models from Hot Wheels even with the oversized and unsightly steering wheel on the trailers. :D I am glad the cabs were left untouched and also sold separate. I really wasn't into the trailers that much but did like the truck cabs and picked up most of them at a toy store in the Richmond, CA area in the early '80's - back in the days when there were nice toy stores with lots and lots of diecast to be tempted with.

I'm probably a little partial towards this, as I live less than an hour from the current Volvo plant in Dublin, which was a former White plant.

I've only got one of Hot Wheels' semi trucks, an '80s issue of the Kenworth K100 (aka Thunder Roller) which doesn't have a trailer fifth wheel hole, meaning it can't exactly hook to a trailer.

Looks great! I know Steering Rigs trucks are fairly rare, and thus pricey, but I have to get this one especially.

I remember seeing the Steering Rigs in store and thinking how awful they looked, big steering wheel and all....today have yet to find one and they are on my most wanted list :duh:
