Car of the Day for April 30, 2015 is the Imperial 1964 Chevrolet Impala

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile (upper mid-size from 2000 to 2007) which was built by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996 and 2000 to date. Deriving its name from the South African antelope, Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model through 1965 had become the best-selling automobile in the United States, competing against the Ford Galaxie 500 and the Plymouth Fury when full-size models dominated the market.

Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen."

For 1964, the Impala was slightly restyled, reverting to a more rounded, softer look. The signature taillight assembly had an "upside-down U" shaped aluminum trim strip above the taillights, but the individual lights were surrounded by a body-colored panel. The 409-cubic-inch (6.7 L) returned as the big-block option, as well as the 2X4 carburetor setup for the 425 horsepower motors. SS models continued to feature the engine-turned aluminum trim. Rooflines were carried over from 1963 unchanged. Back-up lights were standard.

From 1964 through 1967, the Super Sport was a separate model, with its own VIN prefix (168, versus the 164 for the regular Impala). Super Sports from 1962 to 1964 came with engine-turned aluminum trim.

I'm still finding surprises among Imperial offerings. Apart from the early "badge engineered" Yatming castings, Imperial offerings seem to be a mystery as to who exactly made them. Imperial itself is a toy distributor, I have quite a few bags of mixed marbles with Imperial branding and have seen many, many inexpensive toys with the same brand as well. Until recently the only models I had found were Fords, but this Chevy has now shattered that illusion. The mystery deepens...

PS, I am still of the mind that High Speed may have played a role in producing these. The wheels are one clue, seeming quite similar to wheels sometimes found on Grell models.

You are right, Imperial distributed a lot of toys with their name on them - I, too, recall marbles from them. I know in the late '70's and early '80's "Imperial diecast" seemed to be fairly common in McCrory/JJ Newberry stores. I also know ones like this Chevy were sold in sets with the Buddy-L name on the package in more recent years. I don't have this particular Chevy in my collection but have a number of the Imperial Fords that I picked up at a Safeway grocery store out in Richland, WA a number of years ago. They really are fairly nice castings - ones I have not come across in recent wanderings.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Not a sterling Impala, but certainly an interesting one and nice to see. Yet more castings from a line not well known! Is there no end?? LOL

Support your local demo derby.

I think this model was in fact from a Buddy L semi set which were commonly found at KB Toys about 6/7 years ago. That's where I found my copy. It had a '63 Vette convertible included.
