Today's car of the day is Tomica Limited Vintage's 1956 Toyopet (Toyota) Crown

Wikipedia

The Crown were introduced in 1955 in Japan to meet the demands of public transportation. The Crown was intended for private purchase, while the Master served in a commercial form as a taxi, both with the same 1.5 L Type R engine used on their previous car, the Toyopet Super. The front doors open conventionally, and the rear doors are "suicide doors", a feature also utilized on the Toyota AA, Toyota's first car.

I love Tomica Limited Vintage cars, but there are so many that I don't have as I don't have much of a connection to the very early or more "pedestrian" cars. Sure I love their sports cars, but for me, I wouldn't get that excited about a 50's sedan. Make it a rally car, add a nice history of it being a real race car, add a very cool graphic of the Japanese and Australian flags on the hood, and I'm now fully on board. Plus any car that has the Mobil Flying Pegasus on it has to be cool.

Wikipedia

The Crown was much more popular than the Master due to the more compliant suspension of the Crown, and while the Master was intended for taxi service, the Crown was more accepted by the market over the Master, and more Crowns were sold into taxi service than the Master. The Crown was designed to replace the Super but Toyota was not sure if its independent front coil suspension and its suicide type rear doors were too radical for the taxi market to bear. So the Super was updated, renamed the Master and sold in tandem to the Crown, at Toyota Store locations. When sales of the Crown proved worthwhile, the Master was discontinued in November 1956 after being in production for only one year, and production facilities for the Master were transferred to the Crown. While the Master was discontinued the commercial vehicle based thereon, the Masterline, continued to be offered (utilities, wagons and vans) until 1959. A six-door wagon known as the Airport Limousine was shown as a concept car at the 1961 Tokyo Motor Show. It did not go into production.

 Cool a Toyopet! Back in my college days there was a '59 Toyopet sitting just down from the gas station I was a pump jockey at. :) We were close to an Air Force base and I am guessing one of those airmen probably brought it back from a tour in Japan just as my father had brought home a Henkel from one of his overseas tours. Like my old Studebaker, it sort of ran but outside cranking over the engine it never moved from where it sat. This is an awesome little rally car version from Tomica - so many nice models in their LV series.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Wow, certainly not my expectation of a rally car!!!! A very sedanish body and guess what?? No red or orange glass!!  But the busy graphics, they're a sign of things to come.
Okay, I'm onboard for this one, also!

I've come close to buying an old RS Crown several times, but never close enough.

This model depicts the Crown that was entered in the 1957 Mobilgas Rally round Australia as the first Japan-made car,
and finished the race in third place among foreign cars.

There used to be more info on the Toyota Global site, but I can't seem to find it or it's not there anymore. Instead, you can read more on Speedhunters: http://www.speedhunters.com/2009/02/retrospective_gt_gt_1957_mobilgas_round_australia_rally/

The original car is long lost to history. The car that can be seen today is a replica. My wife was in Japan at the time the car was displayed at Toyota Megaweb (May 2007) and sent me a few pictures...

It is always cool to see the real thing along with the model. I now have even more appreciation for this release!
