Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels 100% 1952 Agajanian Special

J.C. Agajanian backed many successful racecars and drivers. At age 22, Troy Ruttman piloted this Agajanian Special to victory at the 1952 Indianapolis 500. Although the car caught fire at a routine pit stop, Ruthman restarted and finished first at an average speed of over 128 miles per hour. His closest competitor, Bill Vukovich, was eliminated when he crashed into a wall with only five minutes to go. To improve stopping power, racecars like the Agajanian Special were equipped with disc brakes, which had been used on military aircraft during World War II to enable them to land safely on short runways.

This is from the Hot Wheels 100% Bruce Meyer 4 car set, which is just a fantastic set that I highly recommend tracking down. The detail on this car is great, and just look at that exhaust pipe!

I collect diecast since I can't afford to have a hangar full of real cars, but I enjoy following others collections. Outside of Ralph Lauren, Bruce Meyer's collection is probably my all time favorite. There is so much history in his collection, and it's a very diverse group of everything. He has two of my all time favorite Ferrari's (not just favorite models, but favorite specific chassis'), and even his hot rod collection is the stuff of dreams. I'm not sure if he loaned it, or sold it, but a deal was made for this Agajanian Special to be moved to the Indianapolis 500 Museum in exchange for obtaining his Porsche 935 from them. Here are a few links to drool over:

:1: Wow! At first look, one would not guess that this was from Hot Wheels. It is a super looking historic Indy racing car. I do not remember this set - When was this issued?

John, I believe it was issued around the year 2000, give or take a couple of years.

I know this casting got used a couple of times, seems I recall one on a trailer behind an El Camino was it? in a box set, and the one (actually two) I have from the Haulin' Heat hauler. Mine is black with flames.

I had to look it up, but it came out in 2001. Here is the whole 4 car set:

Wes, the one that came with the Haulin' Heat set is actually different, it's the Sprint Car. The Agajanian Special was only used twice, in this set and in the Gilmore Special set:

The Sprint Car was used 4 times, in the Haulin' Heat set, as a single (with trailer), in the Night at the Races set, and the Photo Finish set. The Photo Finish set was with a '56 Ford Pickup. The Night at the Races is with a '48 Ford Woody:

The Sprint Car looks very similar to the Agajanian Special, but here they are side by side to show the differences:
