What kid wouldn't want one of these for his birthday, well, maybe some of today's kids would prefer getting the latest technology, but when I was a kid, even as the big kid I am now, likes this kind of stuff better. :D

It's quite worn, broken, and missing some components, but I was still excited to receive it as a gift.

Forgot to measure it, but I'd guess about 16x20 inches when closed.

Looks to me like these compartments were probably good to store a few Matchbox cars.

I have a few other Mbx fold out playcases from this era, they've been packed up for a few years now, but I believe they are made of mostly vinyl and hard plastic parts.
This one is just the vinyl case with vacuum formed layout/buildings with a couple vinyl buildings, I believe the missing parts were vinyl items that were lost over the years, except maybe the roof of the tower being vacuum form plastic.

When I was a kid (and even now as I no longer use the other consoles I bought later) I only had a Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP video game console and the old Hewlett Packard desktop (in which a number of my games were Matchbox games, by the way). I played with my diecast much more. I had a few small playsets, like a carwash and that corkscrew shopping mall thing.

That is one neat playcase!

I don't see very many with the buildings, even damaged!

I had a gas station/parking garage
it was either a matchbox or a generic vinal toy

Had one of these too & would like one again

That's one thing i never got as a kid, car cases. Mine went from a shelf by my bed (which I used to wake up and play with along with my brother in the middle of the night) to being tossed in a big toy box with all out other junk. Between that and the smash up derby contests we used to play, they really didn't stay in very good shape. Which is surprising since I used to like to keep most of my toys in geeod shape as I got a little older. But those poor Lesney, Toppers and redlines were doomed!

Glad you're all liking this, like I mentioned, I have a few other Mbx playcases, but never got around to doing pics, and this one was a big surprise to get from my friends on my b-day, so I had it out. I'm sure they found it at a yardsale, (they do that every weekend), but they usually sell this kind of stuff online since they typically get good money for older games and sets, maybe they thought it was too damaged, but knew I'd love to have it anyways.

I'll try to dig one of the others out to do some pics tomorrow.

Mark I have that same parking plaza you show, bought it online a number of years ago, since it reminded me of one I had, but it's battery operated.

The one in Microbuss's link appears to have the manual crank on top, which is more like what I remembered having as a kid.....but I don't recall it bringing me near the kind of joy that guys auction price would reflect. :D

I enjoy seeing these vinyl play cases - they were some great items that Matchbox released in those days. I never had any of these - did have some of the cardboard roadways that were made in the '60's. I remember seeing these in the Sears wishbooks and others.

I never had these either, but like you I do remember the Roadways. It's funny, but I didn't expect to ever collect big cases like these, thinking I'd just stay focused on diecast, but when the first came along by a friend, I thought they were the neatest things, and even vaguely remembered other toys similar to them as a kid, that being made of vinyl, and sometimes vacuum formed plastics.
