Hi everyone, just thought I'd post photos of another playcase, it's the one I had that was easy enough for me to dig out of the closet. It's a military theme this time, issue in or around 1976.
This and a couple others, which I haven't posted yet, were purchased from a collector friend I met through another board who happened to live locally. I think they came to him from online purchases of Mbx lots, and the playsets were items he didn't collect for himself.

It's in really great shape, and nearly complete, just appears to be missing the gas pumps, though the big thing also missing is the cardboard backdrop which would snap in at the back of the layout.

I didn't know where my one and only Sea King was so as to show it in the playcase, but it is neat that they developed a playset that included that series.
Vehicles were not included, I just put them there for show. :D

That's a nice one Doug and the vinyl looks in great shape. I hardly ever see it compared to the others with angled corners. Maybe you got it from Jeffy weffy THE DUKE!

I, too, would have loved that to death. Too bad I'm so old these weren't even "twinkles" in the designers' eyes when I was in the right demographic to want them. Now that I think about it, I lived in mountain towns miles and miles from the nearest stores that might have stocked sets like this....and I can't remember ever seeing them in stores.

(It was also during my 'collecting hiatus'.....before I realized I was a "collector". I had to be a manly man and not play with toys during that era.)

Thanks guys, I enjoy collecting them, but probably would have also loved to have had them to play with when I was a kid, oh well, I guess if I ever have space to keep them open on display I'll get to play then. :D

You are right Jim, this and a couple others were from Jeff, I also recall there was this one older issue he showed me, it was very cool, but he told me before he showed it that you already has dibs on that one. :D

Blair, I stopped playing with the toys about when getting a drivers license and the real cars were increasingly interesting to me, but even then, occasionally I would still go to the toy room and check out my toy cars, ok, maybe I even zipped them around the shelf a couple times, eventually I was moving out of state, so I packed them up and hid them in moms attic. I didn't realize there were others like me who also never lost their love for toy cars, until after I recovered them from their hiding place (moms attic) years later.

Good timing, as that seems to be around the same time when Matchbox had tons of different Army-related twin-packs.

I have a handful of those releases, well two, the Badger and Field Car (that may be inspired by an International Scout).

The Sea Kings for some reason, must have been an utter failure. They didn't last that long. I think Daron/Realtoys got the toolings and still make them even now.

Cody, you probably notice, but your two are pictured on the front of the case. I always think of that Field Car as a Scout myself.

I have a number of those military twin pack issues from that era, I would have duplicated the picture, with models in the photo on the front of the case, but the tub I think they are in got stacked with stuff while digging out this playcase. lol, actually I think I already had the tub stacked with a bunch of other boxes, and didn't feel like moving more stuff.

That's how I'd like to display these cases someday, opened up and displaying the models shown in the photos on the front of them, if I only had space. :D

I was still collecting (playing) with Matchbox cars in 1976 - even got some of those military two packs but do not remember this case at all. Of course I also did have some other things on my mind that year as well - year I got done with the first four years of college and probably even more important - the year Vel and I got married. :D

Doug and Blair, I suppose most of us took some time off from "cars" to go jitter-bugging during the teens and through the twentys. There was a lot to do! Doug, from Jeff I got a 1970 "Matchbox U.S.A. Play and Game Case" Like the Traffic Game, there's a top to spin on the roof of one of the buildings to move your car/man around the town, regular wheeled vehicles are shown on the cover. I have my cases out but they're up high on top of display cabinets and long shelves where I couldn't put small cars but did have wall space to fill.

Now that you mention it Jim, I remember the spinner, but not much else about the playcase, other than what a great looking set it was....Sometime when you climb up there to dust or whatever, you'll have to share some pics with us.

Thanks,

I've kind of passed by the Mbx Sea Kings over the years when I'd see them at shows or markets etc., which wasn't too often anyway. I did finally buy one example from a small hobby shop I frequented, the owner was trying to clear stuff he had on the shelves for way too long, and gave it to me super cheap.

That's cool, playcases are always fun to see, and Matchbox had some neat ones in those days.

Great case!

Doug, Blair and Fucumi, like you guys I put my cars away when I reached my teens, and never thought much about them.

My parents neighbor (who was like an extra grandfather to me growing up)was big into model airplane and these old metal soldiers and their equipment. When I was in college and home on break I was over his house and we got talking about his toys, he mentioned how he "put away his toys when he discovered girls, but once he was married he needed something to do to hide from his wife, or just relaxe after work". I laughed at it as a big joke, but realize as I have gotten older I see that it is healthly to have your own interest and stress release.

In my twenties and when my parents were cleaning out their house the kids were told to take what we wanted. I left with a whole lot of Matchbox and any other fire trucks I could find. I was not sure why I needed to have them, but took them. I put a few on display in my then apartment, but most in the closet. A few weeks later I found my self walking the toy isle of Bradley's (anyone else remember those stores.) and the rest is history.

We didn't have any Bradley's in States I've lived in, but I do remember picking up a number of Matchbox at a toy show back in the 90's with this stores price stickers on them, I also remember it was some great models and sets I had never seen before, and was thinking what a great store that would be to have around.

Bradley's was basically the Target of the day in my area. I kind of miss the 90's, we had Bradley's, Caldor, K-Mart, Ames and a few others. Now it down to Target or Wal-Mart around here.
