Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 2013 Tesla Model S

Wikipedia

The Tesla Model S is a full-sized plug-in electric five-door, luxury liftback, produced by Tesla Motors. Since its introduction in June 2012 it has achieved rapidly growing sales, particularly in Norway and California. It scored a perfect 5.0 NHTSA automobile safety rating. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official range for the Model S Performance model equipped with an 85 kWh battery pack is 265 miles (426 km), topping the Tesla Roadster to lead the electric car market. EPA rates its energy consumption at 237.5 Wh per kilometer (38 kWh/100 mi) for a combined fuel economy of 89 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (2.64 L/100 km).

Another hit from Matchbox this year. 2015 is proving to be a bit of resurgence for Matchbox, with what seems like more licensed models, a new premium line and a flood of new Jurassic World items that hopefully can bring some more interest to the brand from retailers. They did a great job with this one, and the only faults I can find are with my specific example having poorly chromed rims, but most of the pictures I've seen of others are much better, so I will chalk that up to a fluke and an inevitable result of mass production of a $1 toy rather than a common occurrence.

Wikipedia

The Model S became the first electric car to top the monthly new car sales ranking in any country, twice leading in Norway, in September and again in December 2013. The Model S ranked as the world's second best selling plug-in electric vehicle after the Nissan Leaf in 2014. Global cumulative sales passed the 75,000 unit milestone in June 2015.

The Tesla Model S won awards such as the 2013 World Green Car of the Year, 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year, Automobile Magazine's 2013 Car of the Year, Time Magazine Best 25 Inventions of the Year 2012 award and Consumer Reports' top-scoring car ever.

:toy: Nice looking car from Matchbox. I can't remember which store I was in on our recent trip but two women were looking at the toys and wanting the Tesla -asked me if it was on the pegs or in one of the five packs. Sadly there were none and they left somewhat disappointed. I am thinking they were wanting to get it for one of the woman's son. Share this simply as a note that there are still young boys who want Matchbox and want models representing real cars!

They nailed the look of this one. I'll definitely be on the lookout for it if and when it ever gets into the stores around here. The casting looks a little soft in places but, hey, for a buck I'll take it!

(I read recently that the Tesla Model S is the best-selling luxury car in the U.S. in it's price range. Not too shabby for a newcomer to the business!)

I love it. I could use two or three, but doubt I will find one anytime soon. With patience, we will all eventually have our shot at it...and the re-colors. It's just hard to be patient when something this nice finally comes out.

I have to say I'm surprised, I really though someone was going to say "Oh my...this is far superior to the hot wheels version" so I could quote you and tell you why its not.

Because the hot wheels has a real spoiler (and cooler rims), I think this car, like the Porsche Panamera or how ever its spelled needs a rear spoiler, it makes the car look pretty decent in my eyes, with out it its just Ok

Hey Tom. I'll go ahead and say it just for grins, but this is far superior to the Hot Wheels version. That actually is my opinion, that the Matchbox is better, but I completely agree with you that the Hot Wheels one looks great. The only problem it has is the sloped chin, but I can forgive that. The spoiler I think does look really good on it and adds a bit of character (plus it has the really nicely done hydraulic bits that raise and lower the spoiler molded into it). The widened stance also looks pretty good and is pretty tastefully done. Here is a comparison of both. I think both models are worthy to add for anyone. Although for the record, the Porsche Panamera comes from Porsche with a retractable spoiler so both the MB and HW versions are correct just one is up and one is down. The Tesla does not have a retractable spoiler so the HW is inaccurate to have included one. But I agree it looks good.

Nice comparison, I noticed another custom feature on the hot wheels, my Teslas missing most of its tampos.
