Tesla Model S; Hot Wheels vs. Matchbox

Up for your inspection today is a comparison between two versions of the Tesla Model S from Hot Wheels and Matchbox. Judging from pictures online ahead of time, it was obvious the Matchbox would be the runaway winner here. Comparing them in hand though, it is much closer than I would have thought. It's still no contest, the Matchbox remains the triumphant winner, but the Hot Wheels isn't nearly as exaggerated as I had expected it to be. I had read that both were designed by the same designer, but I figured they were two completely unique castings. Looking at it in hand, they actually started life as the same casting. The roof line, windows, and interior are identical on both cars. Looking at them side by side, you can see that it looks like they started with the realistic Matchbox casting and then widened up the flares a bit, added a bit of flaring in the side skirts, cut off the front and back bumpers and then added unique bumpers to the Hot Wheels. You've got the infamous sloped chin, you've got the tell tale Hot Wheels large rear spoiler, but the sides aren't nearly as exaggerated as you would think since it appears to be just a modified Matchbox. I actually think it works, and I am fully comfortable saying I really like the Hot Wheels. If I had to choose just one, the Matchbox wins every day of the week, but the Hot Wheels ended up being much better than expected so it gets points for being much more accurate than similarly styled Hot Wheels track ready cars.

Thanks for the comparison on the models, Ben!

Both models look quite nice for $1, and while the MB version looks to be superior, the HW version looks better than anticipated (as mentioned).

Interesting comparison that graphically illustrates the distinct "mission" if you will, of each brand. For me, realism wins every time...Plus the tail-lights on the MBX wrap around as opposed to the HW which stop short.

I'm hungry
I dig HWs Tesla, I like the silver paint, cool PR5 wheels and custom rear spoiler. I do give the MBX credit for the whole taillights being paint, they certainly win in the detail paint department.

I like the wing on the HW but otherwise I think the MB is my favorite

Thanks for the review Ben!

I'm really happy to see that the Hot Wheels model did not lose the sideview mirrors.

I've seen numerous HW Tesla in stores but not a single Mbx Tesla.

FYI: The Lamley Group Blog indicated that HWs designers purposely modified the design of their rendition by modifying and stylizing the body design of the HWs version to give it a slightly different appearance from the realistic MB version..

I understand the two different results they were going for, but the Hot Wheels is just bad if you ask me. The wheels and the way the sideskirt is integrated into the base just look wrong.
