So I picked up 3 of the 4 Tomica Premium cars and was quite suprised by the differences of the 3. Never seen such a wide swing in castings in one set.

The Good
Lotus John Player Special Europa. Fantasia model. I would swear it was a Vintage

The OK. Nissan Skyline R34 oops put R33
Looks like a typical Limited with opening doors.

The Ugly. Mazda RX-7. Just a bad looking casting in my opinion. Tomica did all they could detail-wise but the shape of car just looks wrong to me compared to Aoshima casting.

Is the RX-7 lifted?? Not pretty.

The stance on the RX7 is terrible, maybe if lowered it'd look more natural, as of right now it looks too tall. I actually was amazed by the build quality of the R34, personal favourite, but I have yet to see the Lotus in person.

The Lotus is quite nice but surprisingly the Morita fire truck is the best. Totally didn't expect it! My RX7 will arrive in a month or 2 and from the pics it does look pretty bad.

Yeah I hear the fire truck is quite nice but it does not fit in to my collecting taste

The more I see of that Europa, the more I want it. Do you have Kyosho's Europa? If so, which would you choose between them? I agree about the RX-7, it just looks off, which is a shame as I like the color choice and graphics. The Skyline looks very well done, but I have enough Skyline's, and the Morita has tempted me big time. I don't collect fire trucks, but it looks like a Dakar Rally truck and seems to be pretty impressively done.

It's gonna be bigger than the Kyosho, the Tomica is 1/59 scale.

The Tomica is indeed 1/59. Size doesn't look bad unless you place it next to the Kyosho. I like the paint better on the Tomica and it has more detail.

Very interesting... thanks for the pictures and review!

The only Premium that currently resides in my collection is the Morita fire truck... and as echoed above, it is very well done.

Will be very interesting to see other releases for this line, and how they fare to this first one.

It's funny how we each perceive things differtently.
I have all 6 vehicles.
I thought the best were the Morita and the Lotus.
I like the Mazda, but when seen next to other examples, I can see why some people don't like it.
The tank is cool, and so is the Hayabusa.
I personally felt the Skyline was the worst in the group - it looked like a very early example of some of the Tomica Limited (which were just dressed up Regular Tomica).

Pictures of the Morita are posted here:

What's really hard to appreciate in the pictures is that the details are "under glass" and it has be held and looked closely to really be appreciated. Otherwise exterior features don't show much.

For those with more money to burn, there's a 1/43 version of the Morita wildfire engine by "Tough43" (manufacturer) up on ebay; base price is $220! It has the greater detail allowed in a large-scale model, including the crew cab interior TV monitors and the two "deck guns" that allow the crew to fight fire from inside the cabin. Sadly, what it doesn't seem to include is opening gull-wing/accordian style side compartment doors....probably too hard to figure out how to make them stay open.

Of course, that failure is the only reason I'm not already a proud owner......

Guess I'll just have to continue studying how to add scale model 'deck guns' into one of my Tomica models......
