Today's car of the day is Hongwell's 1999 Volvo S80.

Wikipedia

The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars since 1998, introduced to take the place of the rear-wheel-drive Volvo 960 (later S90) saloon in the model range. The Volvo S80 has been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden. The design takes styling cues from the Volvo ECC concept. The first-generation S80 is based on the Volvo P2 platform. Over 368,000 first-generation S80s were built. This S80 was equipped with numerous safety systems, including Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Whiplash Protection System WHIPS. The S80 featured a straight-six engine in a transverse engine mounting. No existing manual gearbox would fit in the engine bay with the six-cylinder engine, so Volvo had to develop their own, the M65.

I am appreciative of Hongwell's castings of cars not otherwise represented in small-scale, and Hongwell made quite a few Volvo models that no other toy company attempted, including this S80. Even as the "upscale" Volvo, the S80 was still a common enough sight on the roads that I really enjoy having the ability to have one as a 'diorama' model.

Wikipedia

The S80 was initially available with four different engines. Starting the range was a detuned 2.4-litre 139 hp five-cylinder. This was also available as a compressed natural gas (CNG) and as an liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) version. The fully tuned version produced 168 hp. Next up was a 2.9-litre 193 hp six-cylinder, then 268 hp T6, and finally, the 138 hp 2.5-litre Volkswagen-sourced Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine. The 2.9 has a straight-six engine, while the T6 was powered by a de-stroked twin-turbocharged version. In 2000, there was the addition of the 200 hp 2.5T, available with standard all-wheel drive. The 2.5T model featured a light-pressure turbocharger.

Boring! And no, that's not a bad thing. I'd say only a small percentage of today's road cars have a diecast model available, and that's only the more interesting ones. Most of the boring lackluster modern cars don't have a model available. My grandparents' Ford Edge is the only car that we've had, at least while I've been around that has not been made in any scale. Even the quirky cars they had like my grandmother's Datsun Bluebird (HW did it a few years ago) and my Dad's Mercury Capri (Corgi, Matchbox, and a few others did the Ford version) have had models made.

A very well done car! Hongwell 1:72 models are something I've been meaning to start collecting, but have never got around to it.

I hope to get one of these!

I had really hoped, and really expected that the Ford Edge would be made by someone in small-scale. I thought it was unique enough to garner attention from at least one of the toy companies.

There is a really nice one in 1/43 that was only used once as a Bond movie car, and as such, it only came in black (and is pretty expensive for what it is).
Here's an eBay link to one.

Desperate to have the Edge represented in my collection, I bought this heavily modified 1/43 plastic toy version of the facelifted Edge, from Toy State, which has two buttons in the sunroof area, for light and sound features.

I am growing fonder of Hongwell by leaps and bounds. I've managed a small collection of them so far, and each and every one of them is impressive for the scale at the price. They have better detail than most 1/64 at the price level.

Volvo isn't something for me to rush out and try to find, but here again the detail is impressive.

One just doesn't see that many Volvo cars in small scale so this is a nice one from Hongwell. They make a wide variety of emergency vehicles using their various castings for police/fire/ambulances from throughout the world. Yes, when I came across them years ago I was hooked! The 1/72nd scale did not bother me as they are close in size to the original Matchbox models and fit in well with my collecting.

I have a few Hongwell cars, and they are generally very well done. This one looks very nice, except the lack of the rear window post is throwing me off.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
A bad day for me is seeing a Volvo in my rear window. A warning day for me is seeing two Volvos the same day. Even so, this is a very nice casting and I'.m pleased they did this one.
