Today's van of the day is Greenlight's 1973 Volkswagen Type 2

Wikipedia

The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US) or Camper (UK), is a panel van introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following – and initially deriving from Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle) – it was given the factory designation Type 2.

As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the 1960s, including the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100, and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adopting the Type 2's rear-engine configuration. European competition included the 1960s FF layout Renault Estafette and the FR layout Ford Transit.

Another great model from Greenlight, and further proof of the great job they are doing lately. I loved the movie Field of Dreams and I love how they did this version, with a little dirt from the road and all the bumper stickers on the back.

Wikipedia

In late 1967, the second generation of the Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) was introduced. It was built in Germany until 1979. In Mexico, the Volkswagen Kombi and Panel were produced from 1970 to 1994. Models before 1971 are often called the T2a (or "Early Bay"), while models after 1972 are called the T2b (or "Late Bay").

This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windshield, and was slightly larger and considerably heavier than its predecessor. Its common nicknames are Breadloaf and Bay-window, or Loaf and Bay for short.[24] At 1.6 L and 35 kW (48 PS; 47 bhp) DIN, the engine was also slightly larger. The new model also did away with the swing axle rear suspension and transfer boxes previously used to raise ride height. Instead, half-shaft axles fitted with constant velocity joints raised ride height without the wild changes in camber of the Beetle-based swing axle suspension. The updated Bus transaxle is usually sought after by off-road racers using air-cooled Volkswagen components.

:toy: Nice! I like the roof top luggage rack and the front mounted spare tire - nice extra detail touches from GL. Oh yes, cannot overlook the little peace sticker on the left front windshield! :hippie: Or the rear window sticker for McGovern (he was a politician from that other Dakota state for those of you who might be wondering who he was-even ran for president :phone: )

Very cool with the accoutrements and the stickers to make it look like it is in use.

My childhood best friend's dad, who lived across the street, had a white Microbus with the spare tire on the front. That's how I remembered these vans, and always wanted a diecast of one with that spare tire.
I've racked my brain for all of about 45 seconds, and I am not remembering any other small scale Microbus with a front mounted spare tire. Am I being forgetful, or is Greenlight the first to offer one?

That's how I've always remembered this van as well. Without the spare tire they weren't as unique as the original split windows and blended in more, but the spare tire made them stand out. I can't remember anyone else having made one. Perhaps in smaller scale like BUB, Wiking or Herpa, I know there are a ton of VW vans so that wouldn't surprise me but I don't collect them so I don't recall. In 1/64 though I think this may be the first.

Certainly a neat model, and one that will be going on my wanted list. Brings back the days when I was a kid hanging out at the VW dealer my dad worked at, and where I had my first job while in high school.

Such a shame of the mis-placed tampoos. Any case, lovely model, would love to add one to the collection!
