Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels Collectibles' 1998 Jaguar XK8 Coupe.

Wikipedia

The Jaguar XK8 (project code X100) is a grand tourer car that was launched by Jaguar Cars in 1996, and was the first generation of a new XK series. The XK8 was available in coupe or convertible body styles and with the new 4.0-litre Jaguar AJ-V8 engine. In 1998 the XKR was introduced with a supercharged version of the engine. 2003 the engines were replaced by the 4.2-litre AJ34 engines in both the normally aspirated and supercharged versions. The first-generation XK series shares its platform with the Aston Martin DB7. Both cars are derived from the Jaguar XJS, though the platform has been extensively changed. One of the revisions is the use of the second generation of Jaguar's independent rear suspension unit, taken from the XJ40. Development began in 1992, with design work starting earlier in late 1991. By October 1992 a design was chosen and later frozen for production in 1993. Prototypes were built from December 1993 after the X100 was given formal approval and design patents were filed in June 1994. Development concluded in 1996.

Hot Wheels issued this casting three times. For the first two releases, Hot Wheels labeled it a Jaguar XKR, but since they failed to give it the vented XKR hood, it better represents the XK8. For the third release, in green with big chrome wheels, Hot Wheels did package it as the XK8. This red version was the second release, and was issued in 2003 as part of the Motor Trend licensed premium series. The hood opens on this casting, but it is difficult to open without chipping the paint at the hinge area.

Wikipedia

Both the XK8 and XKR are electronically limited to a maximum of 155.4 mph (250.1 km/h). The XK8 came standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, while 18-inch (Standard on the XKR), 19-inch, and 20-inch wheels are available for additional cost. Jaguar's Adaptive Cruise Control is an optional feature available on both models. Both come with all-leather interior, burl walnut trim, and side airbags. In 2004, the grille design of the XKR was refreshed. Initially the ZF ZF 5HP24 five-speed automatic transmission was coupled to the conventionally aspirated 4.0-litre model and a Mercedes W5A580 five-speed transmission to the Supercharged version, but in 2002 the new ZF 6HP26 six-speed automatic transmission was fitted in both versions of the 4.2-litre model.

I have the dark blue one that was part of the four car Jaguar set, and it looks much nicer in red. The dark blue one actually does have the XKR vents on it. They are printed tampos and very hard to see but they are there. I hadn't even noticed until just now when I looked at it after reading your description.

Nice, but seems a tad plain for 100%.

:petkitty: I had to look twice (might be needing new glasses  ) to see that this was indeed a Hot Wheels. Even worse, I have this model, in red, in my collection. (Maybe it is time for another cup of coffee :coffee: ) The collector's series from Hot Wheels included some very nice cars and being a Jg lover I could not resist this one when I had the opportunity to get it.

Neat! Thanks for pointing that out; I just checked mine and see the vents on the blue version. The nerd in me enjoys that HW made both the XKR and XK8 versions available on the same casting.

One very pretty car. Some might complain that it is just a pretender to the throne of the vaunted E-Type, but given that 30 years have passed and that it's top end is well above any road-going E-Type, I can forgive that. OK, the E-Type was better looking, especially in it's earlier forms before it was saddled with those big, ugly bumpers, taillights above the bumper, and exposed headlights, but, in the words of LJK Setright, it was still "The greatest crumpet collector known to man". I imagine that, if the E had never been built, the XK-8 would have gotten a lot more recognition for it's looks AND performance.
