Today's car of the day is Greenlight's 2011 Dodge Challenger RT.

Wikipedia

The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of American automobiles produced by Dodge. The Dodge Silver Challenger was produced from 1958 to 1959. From 1969 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform, sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda. The second generation, from 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda. The third, and current generation, was introduced in early 2008 as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro. The Dodge Challenger Concept was unveiled at the 2006 Detroit Motor Show and was a preview for the 3rd generation Dodge Challenger that started its production in 2007. Many design cues of the Dodge Challenger Concept were adapted from the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T.

Most of the time when finding cars to run for Car Of The Day, I brainstorm on the cars I want to feature, and then cross check them to see if any have been run. However, sometimes I go through the lists of entries, looking for omissions...cars that we all probably presume have already been run, but actually have not. Today's Challenger was the result of one such browse through the lists. The Greenlight Challenger Concept in pink was featured back in 2009, but this is the first time for the GL production Challenger. I really like the shade of blue on this release, which GL identified as a 2011 model.

Wikipedia

The mid-level Challenger R/T is powered by a 5.7 L (345 cu in) Hemi V8 coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission or a Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual transmission. On cars equipped with the automatic transmission, the engine features the Multi-Displacement System and produces 372 horsepower and 398 lb-ft torque. With the 6-speed manual transmission, the Multi-Displacement System option was deleted and the engine produced 376 horsepower and 404 lb-ft torque. Another feature was the Intelligent Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off (iDFSO) available for the automatic models only. The first to combine both a Multi-Displacement system and fuel shut-off. The final drive ratio was 3.06:1 on cars with the automatic transmission, 3.73:1 on cars with the 6-speed manual and 18-inch (460 mm) wheels or 3.92:1 with the 6-speed manual and optional 20-inch (510 mm) wheels. Also available on R/T was the "Track Pak" option group, which includes the Tremec manual transmission, a limited slip differential and self-leveling rear shock absorbers. The Challenger R/T Classic has retro aspects such as script "Challenger" badges on the front panels and black or white "R/T" stripes. It comes with a five-speed automatic standard, with an optional six-speed manual transmission including a pistol-grip-shifter. The wheels are Heritage 20" Torq-Thrust style specials. It became available in Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, Bright Silver Metallic, Stone White and in multiple "heritage" colors: Toxic Orange, HEMI-Orange, TorRed, B5 Blue, Plum Crazy Purple, Detonator Yellow and Furious Fuchsia. Production started in February 2009.

I'm sorry, but I just can't get excited about the "new" Challenger. Sure, it looks a lot like the 1970 version - some say too much - but it weighs half a ton more than it's predecessor! It's a lot bigger in every dimension, due to the fact that it's based on the same platform as the Charger, Chrysler 300, and the late, lamented Dodge Magnum. THAT was a cool car, and it had a lot more reason to be well over 2 tons. Hey, it had a back seat that someone with legs could use (I'm 6'3", and I could sit in the back seat of a Magnum with the front seat set where I'd have it to drive the car). America needs more sporting station wagons. Scratch that - we need more station wagons, PERIOD! Lose some of these me-too SUVs and crossovers and bring back the station wagon! Too bad tat won't happen with the Magnum, since Chrysler Corporation ended it's production to free up the production line for the fat ol' Challenger.

OK, yes, this is a good looking model. Greenlight did their usual fine job sweating the details. I can respect that. But I can't really respect the car. And if you say Hemi Hellcat, I'll just reply Corvette. Invest the money saved in a supercharger and blow the Mopar out of the water. The 'Vette already out-handles the Hellcat, and it's back seat is every bit as useful!

Not to step on your dreams, Wyatt, and not to say you're wrong for wanting what you want, but...

I was just watching the Denver Barrett-Jackson auction on Velocity earlier this evening and they sold a Hellcat for $70,000. Far as I know, that's below sticker. I thought the dealers were demanding something like a 30% premium OVER MSRP on those things! Meanwhile, while taking my car in for service today, I saw a 2014 Corvette Z51 coupe on the lot with 1,503 miles on the clock listed at $61,500. Being the amount on the Monroney sticker, you know full well that they'll come down on that. It seems the original owner had a bum left knee and had difficulty with the clutch. His loss will be someone else's gain, for sure! OK, so the Z51 "only" makes 455 h.p. to the Hellcat's 707, but the Corvette has much better gearing and a curb weight of about 3,400 lbs compared to the Hellcat's 4,500. That's 1,100 lbs, folks or, better said, fully a quarter of the Corvette's weight. Finally, there's the "Show-Off Factor". Let's face it, everybody's head turns when a current generation Corvette goes by. A Challenger turns about as many heads as a Fox body Mustang! For my money, I'll take the better looks and performance of a Z51 Corvette over a Challenger Hemi Hellcat... And pocket the change!

(If anyone's interested in that beautiful black/black 7-speed Z-51 I talk about above, Google Kelly Chevrolet in Phoenixville, PA, and tell them I sent you!)

Luckily, this post is about a Challenger, not a Chevy. And this is a nicely done model in a great color.

I see your point regarding the value, though I have a feeling in 40 years a Hellcat will be worth more than a Z51. Auction prices do not determine worth, just what someone paid. Someone might over pay or under pay, but that's the focus of an auction.

Personally I'd rather take the 60 grand and buy 3 really nice $20,000 classics than have a Z51 or Hellcat.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I think the real Challenger is too big and bloated looking, mainly because of the big sedan platform being used. I consider the Challenger as a two door Charger. Both cars certainly have sold well, and I am happy for that because it keeps that many bland, look alike, other brand cars off the streets.

This is a VERY nice looking diecast by GL
