Today's car of the day is Johnny Lightning's 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Wikipedia

The Mazda MX-5, released as the Mazda MX-5 Miata in North America and as the Eunos Roadster in Japan, is a lightweight two-seater roadster with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Manufactured by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan, the model debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. The MX-5 was conceived as a small roadster - with light weight and minimal mechanical complexity limited only by legal and safety requirements, while being technologically modern and reliable. The second generation MX-5 (NB) was launched in 1998 (for the 1999 model year), the third generation (NC) model was launched in 2005 (for the 2006 model year), and a fourth generation (ND) was released in 2015 (for the 2016 model year). It continues to be the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car in history and by July 2014 over 940,000 MX-5s had been built and sold around the world.

The second generation MX-5 didn't get a whole lot of attention from the small scale manufacturers. Besides this Johnny Lightning, in about 1/60 scale, Hongwell also issued the second gen Miata, in 1/72 scale. The car shown today is the White Lightning version of the blue with white stripes Classic Gold release. I like the subtle contrast of the metallic white paint and the white ghost stripes.

Wikipedia

The redesigned MX-5 was previewed at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1997. In February 1998, Mazda released the second-generation MX-5, production code NB, for the 1999 model year. The NB featured a more powerful engine and external styling cues borrowed from the third generation Mazda RX-7 model, designed in 1995 by Tom Matano. Prices in the United States, the main market for the MX-5, started at US$19,770. Although many parts of the interior and body were different, the most notable changes were the headlamps: the first generation's retractable headlamps no longer passed pedestrian safety tests and were replaced by fixed ones. The new car grew slightly in width compared to the earlier model; its dimensions were: length 3,945 mm (155.3 in), width 1,678 mm (66.1 in), height 1,228 mm (48.3 in) and wheelbase 2,265 mm (89.2 in). Without options, the NB weighed 1000 kg (2300 lb). The new generation was slightly more aerodynamic than the original, with a Cd figure of 0.36.

Cool. Neat casting that I don't think I have yet... so need to track one down. ^_^
The white on white actually looks neat on this car.

The subtle stripes are nice and good to see some bits to facilitate rearward visibility.

:toy: Being a Mazda lover I know I had a bunch of these JL Miata's. I remember when Mazda first brought this nifty sports car out - Velma and I took a test drive in one - zoom, zoom, zoom! It was fun and very tempting but not with two small children in those days - of course that is why Mazda had the MVP. :D Know I sold most or all of these but I will look through my stuff and if I still have some left I will set one aside for toyotageek.

That it is! Regular issue was blue with white stripes.

Yes, both "V.I.P." television series releases were identical... and I am 98% sure that the V.I.P. set came out first, before the Modern Muscle series. I believe the Miata and Jag XK8 were originally cast specifically for the show set.

This is a nice little model, no doubt about it. Funny, I'm home from work sick today, so I spent a good bit of time freeing up some Johnnies I bought from a friend a couple of weeks ago. I need to find either that red one and repaint the interior tan, or the deep red version with the tan gut and respray it bright red. That would be my wife's dream car (or almost so, anyhow) - a red Miata with a tan interior and top. In fact, I built her a 1:25 Monogram model of the 1st-generation Miata (the one she REALLY loves!), probably 25 years ago, before we were even married. Miatas are NOT my dream car, however; At 6'3", I just don't fit!
