Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 1997 Dodge Copperhead Concept.

Wikipedia

The Dodge Copperhead, also known as the Dodge Concept Car and Dodge Concept Vehicle, was a concept car created by Dodge as a slimmed-down version of the Dodge Viper for buyers who couldn't afford the Viper's $75,000 cost. The Dodge Copperhead was unveiled at the 1997 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Many reviewers were impressed with its aerodynamic, yet rugged styling with its Copper Fire Orange color and the fact that its sale price would be about $30,000 USD ($45,000 less than the Viper). The Copperhead, unlike the Viper, was made more for handling and driving pleasure, while the Viper was made more for raw power.

I felt bombarded by Dodge Copperhead Concepts in diecast when the actual car was a hot topic. Miniatures were released by Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Maisto & Majorette - all at the same time. The Matchbox still looks good by today's standards, especially with the Premiere details, which was issued as a Premiere First Edition, coupled with a "raw" bare-metal version. Greenlight is just starting to try the same concept with their new castings.

Wikipedia

The Copperhead had excellent handling due to its low, wide stance. Dodge engineered the Copperhead to make the driver feel the road and the pavement, and this was done by stretching the wheels to the end of the frame, adding 5" of ground clearance and a stiff suspension, making this car marketed more towards enthusiasts. The Dodge concept was due to be released in 2000. After the unveiling of the Copperhead, Dodge received a complaint regarding ownership of the rights to the "Copperhead" name. A customized 1950 Ford Coupe owned by ZZTop's Billy Gibbons had already been registered with the Copperhead name. As a result, DaimlerChrysler unofficially renamed the car, with it being referred to as the "Concept Vehicle" instead of "Copperhead" in press kits, scale toys, and other merchandise. This made press kits or items with the Copperhead name collectibles.

 Still prefer the Atlantic and the Sidewinder, but this is a great effort. I didn't know Mbx tackled this one either.

:toy: The Copperhead was a nice looking concept car. This version from the Premiere range looks sharp - the Goodyear rubber really adds to the overall look of the car.

Here's what it looked like as the regular 1-75 release, for 1999, I believe (or was it 1-100 that year? I can't remember.)

How is the scale on this? Is it closer in size to the Hot Wheels or to the Maisto? Not that there is a huge difference, but the Maisto I think is a little too big. I really like the blacked out side vents and all the added interior and rear detailing.

It is pretty doggone close to the Maisto measurements, so notably larger than the HW (and the Majorette is the behemoth of the group, dwarfing them all).
