Today's car of the day is Welly's 1982 Chevrolet Corvette.

Wikipedia

The Chevrolet Corvette (C3) is a sports car that was produced by Chevrolet for the 1968 through 1982 model years. Engines and chassis components were mostly carried over from the previous generation, but the body and interior were new. It set new sales records with 53,807 produced for the 1979 model year. The C3 is the third generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, while the 1969 through 1976 models mark the second generation of the Corvette Stingray.

The 1982 Corvette has been featured on the Welly website as "Coming Soon" in small scale for many, many years, but it has finally materialized for 2015 (I've not heard of any reports that this casting had been found prior to this year, so that's what I'm going with for now). The T-Top panels look a bit strange in clear, and the white paint shows a lot of imperfections on my copy. Overall, it is a really nice effort for a cheaper offering, although the purchase prices for Welly models isn't really that cheap anymore, and international shipping compounds the cost.

Wikipedia

In 1980, both front and rear bumper covers were restyled with integrated aerodynamic spoilers that resulted in a significant reduction in drag and increased radiator air flow. The hood was also restyled. The crossed-flag emblems disappeared from the front fenders and were revised to a more elongated style on the nose and fuel door. The speedometer in all cars read to a maximum of 85 mph (137 km/h), mandated by a new and controversial federal law. Air conditioning became standard, as did the tilt-telescopic steering column, power windows, exterior sport mirrors, and the convenience group. New was an optional roof panel carrier that would mount to the rear fastback deck. 1982 saw the debut of the "Cross-Fire Injection" fuel delivery system. The engine produced 200 hp and was mated to a new four-speed automatic transmission with torque converters bypass in the top three gears. The final model C3 Corvette's published performance numbers were 0-60 in 7.9 seconds-the quarter-mile in 16.1 @ 85 mph (137 km/h). This was the last year for 8-track tape availability and new “cross-fire injection” emblems appeared on front fenders.

Nice model - Wellys are what Matchboxes should be. This one looks to capture the spirit of the original.

Hard to find though retail though. I get mine via a well known auction house from Bulgaria. They end up about the price of a Tomica and cheaper than a MB bought on line.

:toy: Outside of the odd clear top a pretty nice offering from Welly. To bad Welly models are so hard to find these days - think they could give Matchbox a run for their money.

I'd give this one an "A" for effort and a solid "B" for execution. To me, the curvature of the T-tops, rear window, and window sill all look a tad bit "off", but the generic wheels, while looking nothing like the factory aluminum jobs, look right at home on this late C-3. All in all, a pretty sweet little 'Vette (High praise from me, considering that the 1974-'82 Corvettes are my least favorite of the species).

Looks very good. How close is it to 1/64 scale?

Pretty close, as far as I can tell. The proportions are very similar to the Greenlight version:

I have what is likely one of Welly's first Corvettes, a probable copy of Tomica's in bright pink, which I got in a lot purchase. It is very crude compared to this.

Looks great. In fact, I might venture to say it looks better than the GL!

At first glance, I am quit captivated by this model!

As Jim points out; the windshield, t top and rear hatch area do look a bit off. As they do to me even on the real 1:1s in the late C3 producation. Compared to the GL above, I would give this model the nod over the GL in execution. They captured the more extreme tilted back at the top of the front nose cap and the relatively small rear cap facia piece compared to the body styling from 1978 onward that changed the wheel well lines, front and rear ends, and overhangs several times through to '82.

I have always attributed this change more to the move from St Louis to Bowling Green assembly plants, particularily for the '82 model. Perhaps slightly different tooling and assembly process at the new plant location were made, as during the 1981 production run - cars were simultanously produced at both plants for a brief time, but only Bowling Green in 1982

Another consideration is that the optional glass tops used here do look thinner and flatter than the body colored tops during the last three years of C3 production. The one shown reminds me more of the aftermarket version which Chevrolet commissioned, but never used once they designed there own panel. Some detail changes or a smoked plastic would be appreciated here on the casting to help the roof panel beter match the front and rear glass pieces. They also had those mirrored glass finishes back then - that doesnt appeal to me at all.

The fixed rear glass also dramatically changed the line appearence of the body to me as well - when first introduced in 1978.

The '82 has always had the longest overhangs to me at the front and back of the car, the 1:1 '82 still makes for a great GT cruiser.

The wheel/tire design is definetly an after market wheel and tire. Corvette did not use the split spoke design until 2006 for the Corvette. The thinness of the spoke design is also an after market prodcution wheel indicator to me. As is the low side wall height. Now since 1982, many a new C4, C5, and C6 wheel design has found its way back to the C2 and C3 market, particularily as a daily driver or an autocross/off road racer.

As has been semi - noted above, two of the most rarely talked about design elements of the 1982 C3 are that the main chassis frame dates all the way back to the 1963 model and the main body design back to 1968!

 for this one from me as well!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Very good comments and observations from MFRacing above. Not exactly a true casting but very acceptable!

Thanks! Being a long time C3 judge for the National Corvette Restorers Society, kind of makes those details show up or stick out!
