![]() Today's car of the day is Yat Ming's 1975 Volkswagen Scirocco. ![]()
![]() For more information and pictures of the real car please visit: Volkswagen Scirocco ![]() ![]() I've always enjoyed the Yat Ming Scirocco, and finding this beautiful color variation was a real treat, even though a corner of the bumper is broken off. The "Turbo" tampos are laughable on a car that was never offered with a turbo, but the metal base and opening doors make up for it. ![]()

Seeing opening doors on 30 year old budget level diecast is always a good thing. Having said that, doesn't this look a bit skinny compared to what I remember the real car looking like? Usually Yat gets the proportions pretty good, but this one seems off to me. |

Looks great in ths shade of red. I had no idea it even existed. I've got the silver version in my junkyard since the front axle is collapsed. |

I'm a long-time Scirocco fan. It's looks got to me the first time I saw one in a car magazine before they even came out. It looked as good as the Rabbit on which it's based looked dorky. Unfortunately, the first time I tried one on for size, a used model in 1979 after I finally got my license, I discovered that it was too cramped for my 6'3", 230+ lb frame. The last first-series Scirocco I saw was about 8 years ago. The car was rust brown... not painted that color, but corroded to that shade! Lotsa rust-through in the rocker panels, doors, and fenders too. Too bad: a great-looking car like that deserved better. If the tampos on this little beauty really bother you, they'd probably yield to a deft application of a dry-erase marker in a few minutes... If you're not bothered by altering an unusual version of the car, that is! (I say GO FOR IT!) I think it would look a lot better, but then I think most diecasts would look a lot better without all of those distracting tampos! |

Please don't take this wrong, but for me kind of a let down after last week with a Schuco, Siku and Penny model to play with! With that said, I too once had the grey one in my collection. Always liked those, what we call now older Yat Ming castings but were brand new to us way back then.

Yo, P.J.: Maybe I'll have to nominate my wife's "new" late-80's vintage M.C.Toys (Maisto) Jaguar XJ-S for inclusion here. It's in about the same league as this little VW!

When I pick the cars to run for COTD, besides making sure they haven't been run before, I select seven vehicles at a time, and try to keep them somewhat on similar playing fields for the voting at the end of the week. So, last week's submissions were of a higher caliber of collectible than the seven I chose for this week - I won't deny that at all! |

This along with the Bug seem to be two of the harder Yatming castings to track down. I've somehow managed not to find this VW yet. I like this one Dean. A lot.

Love this one...very well done for the price point. Seems like a difficult model to find in decent condition. |

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!

Falls in the middle to me...good enough to consider collecting, but disappointing that it is awkward enough not to be a favorite. |

I have this color variation too. It doesn't feel out of proportion in-hand as much as larger in scale since it needs to work with existing Yat wheels. Yatming tampos not my favorite. Been tempted to remove them. |
