Today's car of the day is Yat Ming's 1975 Volkswagen Scirocco.

Wikipedia

The Volkswagen Scirocco is a sport compact coupe produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen, undergoing two generations of development between 1974 and 1992 and reintroduced in a third generation in August 2008. The Scirocco shares its name with the Mediterranean wind Sirocco. Volkswagen makes numerous references in marketing literature to this. As an example, their 1975 print advertisement states: "Scirocco. A hot new car from Volkswagen. As fast and powerful as the desert wind it's named after."

I've always enjoyed the Yat Ming Scirocco, and finding this beautiful color variation was a real treat, even though a corner of the bumper is broken off. The "Turbo" tampos are laughable on a car that was never offered with a turbo, but the metal base and opening doors make up for it.

Wikipedia

Volkswagen began work on the car during the early 1970s as the replacement for the aging Karmann Ghia coupe, and designated it the Typ 53 internally. The platform of the Golf (Rabbit) and Jetta was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive, and the model's all-new styling, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was sleeker and sportier than that of either the Golf or Jetta. The design of the vehicle combined with the lack of US D.O.T. approved rectangular headlights, made it necessary to have four round headlights, two for low beam use and two for high beam use for all the cars imported to USA.

Nice, only seen the gray one before. Looks good in that color.

Seeing opening doors on 30 year old budget level diecast is always a good thing.

Having said that, doesn't this look a bit skinny compared to what I remember the real car looking like? Usually Yat gets the proportions pretty good, but this one seems off to me.

Looks great in ths shade of red. I had no idea it even existed.

I've got the silver version in my junkyard since the front axle is collapsed.

I'm a long-time Scirocco fan. It's looks got to me the first time I saw one in a car magazine before they even came out. It looked as good as the Rabbit on which it's based looked dorky. Unfortunately, the first time I tried one on for size, a used model in 1979 after I finally got my license, I discovered that it was too cramped for my 6'3", 230+ lb frame. The last first-series Scirocco I saw was about 8 years ago. The car was rust brown... not painted that color, but corroded to that shade! Lotsa rust-through in the rocker panels, doors, and fenders too. Too bad: a great-looking car like that deserved better.

If the tampos on this little beauty really bother you, they'd probably yield to a deft application of a dry-erase marker in a few minutes... If you're not bothered by altering an unusual version of the car, that is! (I say GO FOR IT!) I think it would look a lot better, but then I think most diecasts would look a lot better without all of those distracting tampos!

:toy: Please don't take this wrong, but for me kind of a let down after last week with a Schuco, Siku and Penny model to play with! With that said, I too once had the grey one in my collection. Always liked those, what we call now older Yat Ming castings but were brand new to us way back then.

Yo, P.J.: Maybe I'll have to nominate my wife's "new" late-80's vintage M.C.Toys (Maisto) Jaguar XJ-S for inclusion here. It's in about the same league as this little VW! :D

When I pick the cars to run for COTD, besides making sure they haven't been run before, I select seven vehicles at a time, and try to keep them somewhat on similar playing fields for the voting at the end of the week. So, last week's submissions were of a higher caliber of collectible than the seven I chose for this week - I won't deny that at all!

Support your local demo derby.

This along with the Bug seem to be two of the harder Yatming castings to track down. I've somehow managed not to find this VW yet. I like this one Dean. A lot.

Love this one...very well done for the price point. Seems like a difficult model to find in decent condition.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Falls in the middle to me...good enough to consider collecting, but disappointing that it is awkward enough not to be a favorite.

I have this color variation too. It doesn't feel out of proportion in-hand as much as larger in scale since it needs to work with existing Yat wheels. Yatming tampos not my favorite. Been tempted to remove them.
