![]() Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels' 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.4-16. ![]()
![]() For more information and pictures of the real car please visit: Mercedes-Benz 190 E ![]() ![]() As I am sure most will recognize, this Mercedes was one of the group of Corgi castings that were released as Hot Wheels singles in the late 1990's following Mattel's acquisition of the Corgi brand. The new paint and Hot Wheels wheels were a welcome variation, and I do wish more of these 'crossover' releases had been done. ![]()

Just a minor clarification....Mattel had already owned Corgi for some time, this was from after Mattel *sold* Corgi. I forget the details, but I believe a group comprised primarily of Corgi employees bought back the large scale Corgi toolings and rights, but Mattel (for what I deem obvious reasons) held the small scale toolings and closed the Juniors line. My guess is most of the "one and done" or short run Corgi / HW crossovers were to use up already existing stock. Only a tiny handful of Corgi castings saw more than one or two issues as Hot Wheels. I've been a fan of the "Baby Benz" since it came out. One of my favorite bosses from the time I spent in construction drove one back when they were new. It was super cool to me to see an "economy car" with the class and style of a Benz. |

Maybe it is the color or the wheels giving it an odd stance but it looks out of proportion. I look at this gold car and think it is not one I would have bought - I know I had versions of it in my collection but this gold one just does not do anything for me.

A cool model to be sure (I have one myself), but the 1:1 car is just too doggone tiny for me! (I'm 6'3") About a decade ago, I spent 6 agonizing hours riding shotgun in a M-B 190, going to a relative's funeral way out on Long Island. My seat was far enough forward so that my 5'3" wife could fit behind me - with her legs jammed into the backrest of my seat! Her 5'9" Cousin David was just as jammed in behind his father. To this day I can't understand why we had to take her Uncle Fred's car instead of our larger AND more economical Chevy Malibu Maxx (33 observed mpg highway from it's 230 h.p. 3.4L V-6). I'm sure comfort wasn't the reason, since the Chevy has a better ride than the little Mercedes-Benz. The Malibu seats four 6'+ adults in comfort. (I'm thinking it was a control issue - Uncle Fred probably hates to be a passenger as much as I do!) P.S. - I see what pjedsel is saying about the wheels. I think this is one of those unusual cases where black spokes with a polished rim would look better than having polished spokes!) |

The rear end is up to high and those wheels are way way to small and not enough side wall to pull off the Merc look. Also looks like they are set far back in the wheel well, too! It is no wonder it was a one time (?) release. |

Twice actually, counting the FAO box set. The black with gold 5 sp wheels does have a better presence about it. And yes, the real car is tiny, especially for a Benz. I've never seen an A-class, but I presume that is the only smaller Benz around in recent memory. I never thought of this as a "limo," more of a one or two person commuter for around town, or possibly with some speed equipment a neat little Saturday road course rallye racer. |

Although the stance is a bit "off" on this car, it is one I really like. I have a loose one and was RAOK'd one in-blister by a dear friend. |

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!

Not bad lookin' at all, but the small wheels kill it from looking sharp. |

Looks much better black on gold wheels. Though the gold release will always have a great place in my memory along with the Merc wagon and Jag from former Corgi. |
