Today's car of the day is Ertl's 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible.

Wikipedia

The Ford Custom is an automobile which was produced by Ford in the United States, Canada and Australia in certain years from 1949 to 1981. For the 1949 model year, the Custom nameplate was used for the top trim level in Ford's range of automobiles. It was part of the completely new redesign of Ford cars after the war. In 1950, it had a 114-inch track and 196.8-inch wheelbase. For 1950 the name was changed to Custom Deluxe and then to Customline for 1952 when it moved to the midrange position between the new Mainline and Crestline models.

This old Ertl from the 1980's has a painted metal roof, simulating the raised convertible roof, and opening doors with door gaps that would make today's collectors gasp. "Ertl. Just like the real thing. Only smaller."

Wikipedia

The 1949 and 1950 styling was similar, with a single central "bullet" in the frowning chrome grille. In the center there was a red space that had either a 6 or 8 depending if the car had the six-cylinder engine or the V8. The trim lines were renamed as well, with "Standard" becoming "Deluxe" and "Custom" renamed "Custom Deluxe". The new Fords got the now-famous "Ford Crest" which appeared on the division's vehicles for many decades in one form or another.

I've liked this series of oldies from Ertl since learning of them. Simple, crude by today's standards, but quite charming and ahead of their time (early '80's). This is from an era when opening doors were everywhere and door gaps weren't a concern.

Always fun to see a Shoebox Ford!

As a kid I received a set of Ertl "oldies" that included this car, so it has a place in my heart. Unfortunately the green Chevy in that set met with a hammer, and ultimately its demise.

:toy: Part of ERTL's entry into the little car playing field. Well known for their many farm tractors and implements in the late '70's - early '80's they started to offer a selection of cars and pickup trucks. They were well received but never sold as strong as Matchbox or Hot Wheels. This series was neat as it offered a number of vintage American cars such as this shoebox Ford - it also came in all blue.
