Today's car bus of the day is Playart's 1978 Scania CR112.

Wikipedia (Sweden)

Scania CR112 (later called CN112 ) is a bus model designed primarily as an urban or regional bus, manufactured by Scania, of Sweden, during the years 1977-1989. The CR112 body (which is simply designed) and the chassis was completely newly developed. Some differences from its predecessor was larger windows with double glazing, new squarer front with removable panels including wipers, headlights and bumper, a reinforced body with a roof that could keep the entire bus supported in a minor rollover, and better sound isolation along the chassis and drivetrain. At its launch, the Scania CR112 was the quietest bus on the market, with an exterior noise level of 77 dB, which is equivalent to a passenger car.

I lost 107 Playart cars from my collection, including many of my favorites, to the heat damage sustained during flood restoration reconstruction at my house that I've spoken of in bits and pieces around here at the Garage. I'm still photographing the destruction to share, and ask for help in finding replacements for some of the nearly 900 total cars that were damaged / melted. This Playart Scania Bus was stored separately, and escaped damage. I enjoy the 6 opening doors, and the "Hertz Courtesy Bus" livery. The Scania CR112 does not have an entry in the English Wikipedia site, but there was an entry on the Swedish Wikipedia site, which has been linked above, but unless you can read Swedish, you will need a translation website handy. I used Google to translate the information included with today's feature.

Wikipedia (Sweden)

There were two engines: naturally aspirated or turbocharged. The main fuel was diesel but there were also some specimens that test converted for gas or ethanol. Most of the exported models ended up in Eastern Europe with the fall of the Soviet Union. To import the old buses from Western Europe was significantly cheaper than purchasing new buses. Many Scania CR / CN112's from countries including Sweden got new life in Eastern Europe and are still quite common there. It is not uncommon for specimens to have many hundreds of thousands of kilometers on the odometer.

Online references state it is 1/87. The cars I used to represent "Hertz rental cars" in a couple of the pics, are Greenlight 1/64, which I also used as a size reference.

That's cool. I didn't know Playart made any bigger busses like that. I thought they just did the dinky ones and double deckers.

Nice bus, and a nice job posing it with the el Cheapo rent-a-cars. You probably could also have found a couple of Greenlight Dodge Darts and Chevy Cruzes to flesh out the display, maybe even one of their Chrysler 300's to represent the high end. My Hertz bus (a Dinky) is yellow over white and represents a much smaller bus, not one of these full-length city service=size behemoths. (Photo available upon request)

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I really like this bus a lot!! Nice idea displaying it with a rental car lineup!! Hmmmm..... I wonder if Greenlight would consider doing a bus in 1/64. They've done the tow trucks, would a bus sell enough to get back their investment??

A later version of this design was sold in the US as the Saab-Scania N112. It operated in Durham, NH; Stamford, CT; Coralville, IA; Iowa City, IA; Madison, WI; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Honolulu, HI; and Brockton, MA.
