Today's car of the day is Maisto's 1991 Ford Explorer.

Wikipedia

The Ford Explorer is a mid-size sport utility vehicle produced by the American manufacturer Ford since 1990, but in 2010 it was redesigned as a Crossover SUV. The Ford Explorer become one of the most popular sport utility vehicles on the road. The model years through 2010 were traditional body-on-frame, mid-size SUVs. When the first Ford Explorer rolled off the assembly line on April 12, 1990, it was released in May, 1990 for the 1991 model year. First generation Explorers were equipped with the then new 155 hp 4.0 L Cologne V-6, manufactured in Cologne, Germany. Vehicles came with either Ford's own 4-speed A4LD automatic transmission, built in France, or Mazda's 5-speed M5OD manual transmission. Like the Bronco II it replaced, it was an SUV derivative of the Ranger pickup, thus Explorers came equipped with many of the Ranger's optional features.

Even with its movie-star status in Jurassic Park, the first generation Ford Explorer got little representation in small scale. Maisto led the way with this casting, and Summer copied it (even copying the interior with those front seats WAY too close to the dash), adding a spare tire to the back, while Tootsietoy covered the 3-door Explorer Sport model in their Hardbody line. Maisto released at least 22 different variations, but none were in the famous Jurassic Park scheme. This silver version was part of the Tonka series, in which Maisto, in partnership with Hasbro, created Maisto models in paint schemes and tampo printing that were exclusive to the Tonka packaged series. The headlights and tail lights were custom added on mine - Sharpie markers to the rescue!

Wikipedia

Like its direct competitor, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, Explorers were available in both 3-door and 5-door body styles and with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive versions were equipped with a Borg Warner 13–54 part-time four-wheel drive transfer case. The 13–54 was available with either "Touch Drive" electronic push-button shifting or manual lever-operated shifting. Both were "shift-on-the-fly" designs that allowed the SUVs to be shifted from two-wheel drive to "four-high" at any speed and into "four-low" when the vehicle was stopped. All Explorers were equipped with the Ford 8.8 axle in either a limited slip or open version with a variety of available gear ratios. Four-wheel-drive front axles were the TTB ("Twin Traction Beam") Dana 35 with some Dana 44-spec components.

I have a black one in a Channel 6 news livery, which my grandparents, for some reason, have wanted me to take extra good care of since I bought it almost 15 years ago! I would assume because our local news station, WVVA, was on channel 6 before the switch to digital.

This version looks great! Your extra details help it considerably.

22 variations! That's hard to imagine!

I agree that's a good 'everyday' vehicle.

:toy: Yeah...it is a Tonka Toy...well not really but a way to kept the brand out there. Not a bad looking rig either - and your personal touches do help.

Aren't Sharpies GREAT? In patient hands, they can really bring a model to life. Nice work.
