Fake Kyosho Info

I look through Kyosho Ebay listings on a regular basis, and I've suspected that there were a growing number of fake Kyosho's being passed off as genuine. There are a few sellers who routinely list cars usually from the Lamborghini IV and Ferrari VIII collections that have been selling for substantially lower prices than they should. I compared pictures of the listing with my cars in hand and it is clear that they are not the same quality. But I wasn't sure if they were indeed counterfeit or if perhaps there was a large lot of factory rejects that they somehow got a hold of. I came across some pictures posted by another collector on a Kyosho Facebook group, and they convinced me that these are indeed fakes. Granted, they are extremely good fakes, and should you buy one, more than likely you will still like the car. But it's something to be aware of, and be weary that they are out there. Here are the pictures that I found on Facebook, reposted with permission.

First are the boxes, the believed genuine box on the right and the believed fake on the left. Notice the print quality is not as high, the colors and details not as sharp
Posted Image

On the box itself, the one on the right is genuine, and it has higher quality text, thicker cardboard and the Lamborghini holographic sticker, while the one on the left does not have the hologram.
Posted Image

This one is harder to tell, but the genuine one is on bottom and the believed fake on top and the printing is again not as sharp
Posted Image

Now this is a clearer sign. The real card is on the right, the believed fake on the left. The pink Jota is a Secret car, and this card is only put in with the secret versions, the regular colors all have the same silver car. The pink card in this case was in a box with a silver car.
Posted Image

And here is the other side of the card. The one on the left is clearly less detailed, like a photocopy, and also features a different design with the solid black rectangle not going all the way to the top and bottom
Posted Image

Now we get to the cars themselves. The red one is genuine and the silver is the believed fake. Notice the wheels are not as detailed, and the holes not as pronounced. Also notice that the tires are much smaller
Posted Image

The real red one has texture printed within the black vents, the silver does not
Posted Image

Here you can see the same texture issue within the black paint to the left and right of the license plate frame. The logos text is also not as clear and the exhaust pipes are clearly different.
Posted Image

The plastic case is also shorter as noted here
Posted Image

Hard to tell in the picture, but according to the poster, the plastic case on the left is not as clear with a milky appearance and the plastic used is thinner
Posted Image

You can see a few differences in the bases, notably the rivets, center screw hole and Made in China text
Posted Image

I'm sincerely impressed with the closeness of the fake. It is still extremely well done, and so if you unsuspectingly end up with a fake, you might not know it and still be happy. But hopefully this will help spread the word of things to look for. I hesitatingly am linking a few auctions that I suspect fall into this category. I hesitate because without having them in hand, it is too hard to prove anything, the sellers themselves may not realize they are fake, etc. But both of these sellers are routinely listing cars from these two series that I strongly suspect are not genuine. I've compared the listings with my cars in hand and can spot several differences, but beyond that, the prices are substantially less than they should be. A red 458 for example might normally be closer to $30. Here are the links, judge for yourself, but these are what I suspect a fake listing will look like. Coming from China instead of Japan is a red flag. There are plenty of sellers in China with genuine merchandise, but frauds are more likely to come from the source where they are produced. The pictures used do not show any of the holograms. On close examination you can see some flaws in the paint and trim, and the biggest red flag is that the mirrors are completely wrong compared to my example.

Very interesting! And I'm actually very interested in the counterfeit ones for the much smaller wheels / tires - not so much on this car, but on some of the other castings Kyosho released with big tires jammed into the wheel wells, preventing any rolling.

I must admit, I'm seriously considering buying this one:

This one is extremely obvious to me, as the straightness of the trim paint is very poor, the wheels are completely different, and the "L" in LaFerrari is lower case where the real Kyosho is capitalized. But I have every version of the Kyosho LaFerrari, and the fact that such convincing fakes exist, I am tempted to have an example to study.

This is interesting news. Certainly differences in quality. Im a little confused with the link in your second post because
I dont see the word "Kyosho" anywhere in the sale.

I have bought a car from Red_star on ebay suspicious if it was either a fake or a custom . I had never remembered seeing these cars from sale by Kyosho but was not positive. The looks very nice but as was mentioned by Hobie-Wan I believe, that the tires were very poor. They look like they were shredding off the rim. Still the bus looks nice and is unique for being a delivery van which was why I bought it. I always bought my regular Kyosho from Japan because I was worried about counterfeits. These you posted I doubt anyone would notice unless you had both in hand. Scary.

That sucks that there's more fakes to watch out for. I worry about buying Tomica fakes, but I hope the fact I tend to buy playworn ones helps me avoid them. Though I admit to being fascinated by the CF copies and have been collecting those, but at least those are obvious so I know what I'm getting.

Interesting VW bus. I don't remember seeing that one either. I do remember seeing a series of VW busses but I can't remember what the models were beyond one I think having Porsche on the side. I found this picture of another bus I didn't remember:
http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vw-t1-transporter-64-volksdeagen-48833895

And this auction from redstar of the same bus:
http://m.ebay.com/itm/1-64-Volkswagen-VW-BUS-T1-Volksdeagen-Diecast-Car-Kyosho-2007-Motor-Collection-/171776529706?nav=SEARCH

The wheels are definitely different. But the bodies sure do look nice.

Great Article Ben. Ive suspected something being up with these too. I did buy a white 458 from the seller a while back and it just feels different from my other 458's. I'll admit. I am happy with it, but I do believe it to be a fake. I knew this buying it, so there was no disappointment for me. It is a great fake model I'll give them that. Thanks for this informative information.
