Today's car of the day is Y.T.G.F.'s 1998 Volkswagen New Beetle.

Wikipedia

The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. Many special editions have been released, such as the Malibu Barbie New Beetle. In May 2010, Volkswagen announced that production of the current body of the New Beetle would cease in 2011. Engine choices include the 115 hp 2.0 L inline-four for the base model, the 100 hp 1.9 L TDI turbodiesel inline-four (discontinued after the 2006 model year due to more stringent emissions requirements), and the 150 hp 1.8 L turbo inline-four for the Turbo and Sport models.

Similar in scale to the Siku New Beetle, the Y.T.G.F. model would be too large for some collectors, and with the wide assortment of New Beetles available in small scale, it would be easy to omit the Y.T.G.F., but I was drawn to the police graphics and the light bar. Y.T.G.F. has also issued their New Beetle in civilian form, sans light bar and in solid colors. They feature rubber-like tires and pull-back motors.

Wikipedia

At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994. In 1995, a new version of the Concept One was shown, in the Tokyo Motor Show. This one had major restyling and looked a lot like the final production version, launched in 1998. Strong public reaction to the Concept 1 convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle.

 Wow! First time I have seen this one and I want one! So I now add a Y.T.G.F. VW New Beetle Police Car to my every growing want list. It is a great looking black and white unit. What type of store did you find it at, Dean?

I actually got a selection of Y.T.G.F. models (TGIF?!?) from a seller on eBay from China last year. I've not seen them in any stores, unfortunately. Mine all arrived loose, so I imagine they were likely sold in those open display boxes, similar to Kinsmart, but that's just a guess.

Thanks Dean. I was guessing they were sold loose but thought maybe at little gift shops or wherever those displays show up.

Is it 1/64? I'm familiar with a similar 1/64 piece by Kinsmart.

Looks great! One I'll probably have to track down!

:toy: Dean noted in the description that it was closer in size to the Siku VW which would make it around 1/55th scale so just a bit larger than 1/64th but in my book still in the 3 inch range.

John is correct. It is about 1/55, and would dwarf the smaller Kinsmart New Beetle.
