Today's car of the day is from corvairjim's collection, and is Matchbox's 1959 Chevrolet Impala.

Wikipedia

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile (upper mid-size from 2000 to 2007) built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to present. Deriving its name from the African antelope of the same name, Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model through 1965 had become the best-selling automobile in the United States. The 1959 Chevrolet Impala was redesigned. Sharing bodyshells with lower-end Buicks and Oldsmobiles as well as with Pontiac, part of a GM economy move, the Chevrolet's wheelbase 1-1/2 inches longer. Using a new X-frame chassis, the roof line was three inches lower, bodies were two inches wider, and curb weight increased. curb weight. Its tailfins protruded outward, rather than upward. The taillights were a large "teardrop" design at each side.

Wikipedia

The Impala became separate series, adding a four-door hardtop and four-door sedan, to the two-door Sport Coupe and convertible. Sport Coupes featured a shortened roof line and wrap-over back window. The standard engine was an I6, while the base V8 was the carryover 283 cu in (4,640 cc), at 185 hp. Optional were a 283 cu in with 290 hp and 348 cu in (5,700 cc) V8 up to 315 hp. Standard were front and rear armrests, an electric clock, dual sliding sun visors, and crank-operated front vent windows. A contoured hooded instrument panel held deep-set gauges. A six-way power seat was a new option, as was "Speedminder", for the driver to set a needle at a specific speed and a buzzer would sound if the pre-set was exceeded.

 A nice, well loved, Matchbox car from the Regular Wheels day - windows but no interior - tow hook and always in the series a trailer or two to be pulled by the little cars. And we were always so excited when we found them in the counter displays or the store I think of- had a big window display counter with the cars and trucks all sitting on top of their boxes! The early Matchbox cars did not have "window glass" and we all thought all neat when they started putting the "glass" in the cars - really didn't seem to matter that they did not have an interior!

Sure brings back memories.

All that sportiness, plus a tow hook!I used to use mine to haul my #48 boat/trailer.

Hey, I recognize that car! And to think I've only had it for about 4 weeks now. I bought it from a longtime friend and fellow collector (specializing almost exclusively in vintage Matchboxes) at the Das Awkscht Fescht show in Macungie, PA at the beginning of this month. This model was on my "Gotta Find One" list for several years, from about the time I got back into diecast and discovered that one of my all-time favorite car designs (mad love for the cat's eye taillights and swoopy "Gullwing" tailfins!) Dean and I have been PMing each other to see what Corvairs from my collection might be suitable for C.O.T.D., and as I went through the lists of thousands of cars already featured, I realized that I have plenty of cars other than my Corvairs that would make the cut as well. Thanks, Dean, for recognizing my well-loved Impala, and giving the other guys on here the chance to see one of these less-common early Matchboxes.

I want to apologize for the seriously bad photography in a few of these shots... I'm not too good with a camera to begin with, and the camera itself is getting up in age, with only a 5.1 megapixel resolution
