Today's car of the day is Grell's 1959 Sachsenring P240 Cabrio

Posted Image

Wikipedia

The Sachsenring P240 was a luxury car built by the VEB Kraftfahrzeugwerk Horch Zwickau in East Germany between 1955 and 1959. The early preproduction models can be identified by the grill, which is divided in two and has vertical bars.

This definitely falls into the more obscure cars out there in the depths of diecastland. I don't know much about it, but what's not to like about a four door convertible.

Wikipedia

Despite a provision issued by the Comecon limiting production of luxurious cars in Czechoslovakia to no more than 300 per year, Tatra was making more than that. This became an issue in 1957 and 1958, especially considering East Germany was producing the Sachsenring P240 as its own luxurious car. The Comecon decided that the two countries must reach a deal to decide which country would continue production to supply the other with luxurious vehicles. In 1958 the Ministries of Interior of both countries took part in trials, which the East German Minister of Machinery personally attended. The Tatra 603 won, and subsequently East Germany's higher communist officials began to drive the T603, while lower officials had to drive imports from the USSR (especially Volga).

Part of the High Speed legacy, so it ranks high on my list. Don't often see eastern European vehicles in this part of the world, so it is a welcome addition.

How odd and wonderful. I have a Trabant kombi in 1:43, but can't think of any other East German models in the Closeum. Nice choice!

:toy: Awesome. The Grell/High Speed eastern European models are unique and a wonderful addition to the world of small scale die cast. Like others I wonder what happen to many of these castings after High Speed went under. So many cars and trucks that we here in the US were not familiar with.

Nice car except for the fact that it was produced under a Communist regime. ):

Now you've gone and done it! You posted a car that I never knew existed. Right down to it's brand name. Great little model, even though it sort of looks like it could have been the model for "Benny The Cab" from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"!

Thank you! I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what it reminded me of. That was exactly it. After googling the pictures of the cab from Who Framed Roger Rabit, it's a pretty big stretch, but that was exactly what sprung to my mind too and I just couldn't place it.

The styling doesn't do much for me, being long in the front and stubby in the back, but being a 4-door convertible is a plus. I am happy to have this one, along with the hardtop sedan and the station wagon in my Grell collection.

There is some neat trivia included in the original post. New info to me! Grell also made the Tatra that was mentioned in the Wikipedia info.
