Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels' 1991 Acura NSX

Wikipedia

The Honda NSX, marketed as Acura NSX in North America, is a mid-engine sports car manufactured by Honda. The first-generation prototype debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show under the developmental code name NS-X, which represented "New", "Sportscar" and "eXperimental". The prototype's name was later adopted as the official name of the production model, with a slight change to NSX. The rear-wheel drive two-seater was the first car from Honda with an all-aluminium body. Powered by an all-aluminium V6 engine, it featured Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system developed in the 1980s. The NSX was manufactured in Japan from 1990 to 2005 before being discontinued.

CM's Rally Car week is over, now back to our regularly scheduled Car of the Day. Here we have a much talked about model from Hot Wheels. Many were greatly anticipating a stock NSX only to be disappointed by the oversized rear wheels and large spoiler. While I too would have preferred a completely stock model, I still quite like this one and think it is a worthy model to own.

Wikipedia

With a robust motorsports division, Honda had significant development resources at its disposal and made extensive use of them. Respected Japanese Formula One driver Satoru Nakajima, for example, was involved with Honda in the NS-X's early on track development at Suzuka race circuit, where he performed many endurance distance duties related to chassis tuning. Brazilian Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna, for whom Honda had powered all three of his world championship-winning Formula One race cars before his death in 1994, was considered Honda's main innovator in convincing the company to stiffen the NSX chassis further after initially testing the car at Honda's Suzuka GP circuit in Japan. Senna further helped refine the original NSX's suspension tuning and handling spending a whole day test driving prototypes and reporting his findings to Honda engineers after each of the day's five testing sessions. Senna also tested the NSX at the Nurburgring and other tracks. The suspension development program was far-ranging and took place at the Tochigi Proving Grounds, the Suzuka circuit, the 179-turn Nurburgring Course in Germany, HPCC, and Hondas newest test track in Takasu, Hokkaido. Honda automobile dealer Bobby Rahal (two-time CART PPG Cup and 1986 Indianapolis 500 champion) also participated in the car's development.

I'm not enough of a purist to be upset by the wheels or the relatively sedate spoiler, but I do appreciate the fact it isn't covered with tampos.

The wheels really take away from the overall look of the model - great though to see it not buried under a mound of tampos.

Not my favorite wheel choice for a dollar car, but better than it might have been. I'm comfortable with HW's long standing tradition of "big'n'littles," not a deal breaker for me. My doctor had a 1:1, and we always had time to talk about it, one of the few rice rockets of the era I do actually like. I seem to recall the real cars did have a spoiler, although like this model it was tasteful and appropriate...and I seem to recall actually being functional.

All in all I thought this model is very nice for a dollar car.
While I'm not a fan the the wheels either, it's something I can live with for this price point.
I have both the red and the white, and will get other colors when they come out.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I grabbed a few of these. I'm looking for a wheel change so the back doesn't look so big. Thicker spokes may help. A smaller wheel, if positioned carefully, may also be acceptable. Haven't tried it yet.

Really need to find this model; the wheel size different is something I can look over.

C'mon, it's an NSX! :D

The oversize wheel openings don't really take too much away from the car. Even with the outsize wheelwells and the grossly oversize tires, itis still a pretty mice model for a buck. Face it, it could have been a lot worse - just look at their attempt at a Corvair Greenbrier to get an idea of what I'm talking about!
